Have to share my coyote calling experience from this past weekend. I went to my niece's ranch to help my brother spot deer. I don't hunt deer myself mostly because I am too busy shooting other critters. Took my coyote calling equipment with me and brother elected to accompany me calling varmints instead of chasing deer. To abbreviate the story: after just a few minutes of calling, two coyotes came racing straight at us with no hesitation. They stopped about 75 yards out and my brother dropped the first one and the other took off at full speed. I have hit a number of running coyotes with my Ruger #1 .204, but I was not set up appropriately, had the scope cranked up to 12X and couldn't find him in the scope, so I missed my shot. Brother was waiting for me to shoot, so it looked like opportunity lost. The running coyote crossed a creek and ran up a steep bank into the woods. I'm thinking, game over. But then he started barking for his partner, so I answered him. We called back and forth several times and he finally stepped out into the open to have a look. He was about 250 yds at that point. Stepping out in front of my brother is a mistake. He nailed him dead center and he tumbled down the bank. I have never had the experience of talking to a coyote that way. It was way cool. Earlier we got another coyote; a 3-coyote day is special.

Three in a day is something. There's scads of them around me, but I'm lucky to get three in a manth, counting hunting conditions and the time I just can't get out.

I've had one do that before but I didn't think to bark back at him...Cool I learned something today!!
