Tanker Mauser?

Hi all,

Anyone have experience with or own a Tanker Mauser from Mitchell's Mausers? I'm giving them a hard look but have nothing to go on. I'm thinking one in .308 might be the ticket. I have in mind something a bit more rugged than the Rem. model 7.

It's said to avoid Mitchell's like the plague (although I do have one of the collector grade M48s)... As far as I know, those tankers they sell are nothing more than M48s that they chopped down themselves, trying to sell them as if they were actually used by the military.

You might be better off trying to find a sporterized/bubba'd Mauser. It would cost a LOT less, but more than likely won't be as pretty.

Also, don't forget about the Mosin Nagant M38s and M44s. It'll get the job done too, and at $80 or cheaper per rifle, it's a hard deal to beat.
 
I have an FR8, it's a Spanish '43 Mauser rebarreled to .308 and configured to resemble a Cetme rifle, I believe. Short, aperature sight, flash hider on a short barrel - very handy. The only knock is that it is a Spanish made Mauser. You could make a Scout type rifle from any '98 Mauser action, if you could change the barrel or find a milsup already converted. You could even live with the 8mm, that would make it even easier.
 
To my knowledge, they are not chopped Mausers, but brand new guns from the Zastava plant. I read a review on them and it seemed pretty good. Biggest problem was that the iron sights were calibrated starting at 200 meters which is a bit far for the low end of the sights.
There are not many other new short bolt actions in .308 with the Mauser action.
 
They have zero collector's value and like Mitchell's other products are overhyped and overpriced. Spend your money on a true Mauser carbine and it will actually increase in value.
 
Sort of off topic, but the Zastava LK M85 is imported to the US by Remington, models number 798 and 799.

I too have been interested in one of the Tanker carbines in .308.

Thanks to all for the info and responses. I need some time to research the Mosin Nagants, FR8, etc. My experience /knowledge with Mausers is not what it should be to ask intelligent questions but for the sake of keeping the thread going a little longer, is it possible to buy a Mauser barrelled action and build something from there, if so, anyone have any suggested sources??

Everyone seems to know what I have in mind, something short and handy with a tough reliable action, roughly an 18 inch barrel, .308, maybe some kind of scope - scout type or a four power, this will be a shooter not something to look purdy.

Something to consider is the Ruger M77 MkII Frontier Rifle. Its basicly a Mauser action with a 16.5" barrel and a forward mount for a scope. I purchased one in February and I love it. Mounted a Leupold 2.5x scope on it. Short and handy for (me) deer hunting in the woods of Pennsylvania. Mine is in .308. There are other caliber choices available as well. Paid $550 for it.

Granted its more expensive than a mil surp but its ready to go out of the box without any mods to mount a scope, shorten the barrel, etc.
 
Are you dead set on .308? And frankly, it's hard NOT to make a mil-config scout-scoped rifle look pretty.

Anyway, my personal choice would be an M44 with a scout scope (Leupold FX-II 2.5x28 Scout is the one I want). I like the extra weight, especially firing a thumper like 7.62x54R in a carbine-length rifle.

Brownells carries CZ 550 actions, but they're expensive.

Considering the fact that you'd still need to rebarrel and headspace and all that, you'd probably be better served (from the economic standpoint) by getting a normal rifle (Vz 24 is highly recommended) and simply rebarreling the damn thing.
 
Stiletto Null good luck with that scope mount that attaches to the rear leaf sight. I purchased a M44 with a scout mount and scope for my brother as a Christmas gift and we were never able to make the mount solid. After a few rounds it would work itself loose and thus there went the zero on the scope.
 
M-48's

Jon Smith: First Law of Buying Mausers: Anything from Mitchell's is an overpriced rip-off.

That said, the M-48 is a great design, and they can be had from several other suppliers for far less. Check Shotgun News for suppliers; there will be at least a couple.

I made an M-48 into a pseudo-scout for a BUNCH less than the $500 that Ruger wants. And it violates a couple of Col. Cooper's precepts--too long & heavy, wrong caliber, and no iron sights. (Tho' I could replace the 'scope mount with a rear sight in minutes, and the front sight is still in place.)

But an M-48, a Boyd's stock, a glass bedding kit, a Timney trigger, a scout 'scope mount, a Leupold scout 'scope, and of course the dies to reload 8x57mm ammo gets me inside of 2 moa at 200 yds. And I had fun, learned a lot, and spent well under $500. Even counting the 'scope I think.

I'm quite happy with the results. The feral pigs will not quibble that it's not done to Col. Cooper's rigid specs, especially when smacked with a 200 grain Accubond.
 
'Scope Mount

Msgt9410 Sir! I don't remember what 'scope mount I used; it was one I picked up @ a gun show or someplace.

It has 2 main set screws that screw into the trunnion holes for the original rear sights, and a smaller set screw front and rear. I just mounted it, tightened the bejeesus out of all 4 screws, and it works fine.

Jotto: The Ruger idea is sounding better and better, although no iron sights, even though I can't see them as well as I used to, I still like the challenge once in a while.

I'm looking into something that's been advertised as a "Spanish police carbine" which looks like a Mauser re-barrelled to .308.
 
The Fr7 is a small ring '93 Mauser rebarreled to .308, I used to have one, the FR8 uses the '98 action which is considerably stronger. Most countries reconfigured their Mausers many times before retiring them.
 
Had(HAD) a Spanish Mauser in 308 and made it my truck gun. Loved it and looking for another to replace it. May the fleas of a thousand ugly smelly crotch rotting camels infest the thiefs armpits and he die with trench mouth and atheletes foot. Have an M44 now but much prefer the FR-8 for just tossing around. 06
