Here are some Targets from todays range trip. The goal was to break in the new barrel and test some different loads. This is the rifle from the Thread I posted a few days ago "My new Savage 10FP with Choate "Tactical" stock"

I started at around 8am and it got hotter and hotter it was 99 degrees :what: when I left the range at 11:30. The wind kicked up around 10:30 and the mirage started in once the barrel got hot and it wouldn't cool down either ( I didn't really let it)!

I tried 150gr FMJBT and Factory 150gr SP it didn't care for them but they were good cannon fodder during break-in.

I tried 155gr AMAX loads and really wished these would shoot...nope. I loaded them too hot and had some primer fattening.

Then I tried some 168gr pills with 44Gr of Varget and it started shooting! The rifle shoots better than I do and my reloads apparently aren't stellar and the Centerpoint scope leaves a little to be desired above 10X but I'm happy for now!

Targets...all shot at 100yrds:

good shooting. i am too working up some loads for my savage 110 .308 :) also using 168 amax. the only prob is that i ran outta varget. i am also using 46 grain imr4350 with really good results.

the savage is an awesome rifle, and at a great price, they are very accurate. good shooting and once you find a load that it likes you will be amazed at the accuracy you can squeze out of it. thanks for sharing.

Great shooting;)

My 10FP really likes Varget! 155gr SMK over 43.6gr Varget, and 168gr SMKs over 43gr Varget, both shoot .580" @100yrds, 5 shot groups:)

Thanks all, I know it will shoot better once I stop yanking the trigger and get all the copper back out of the bore. Savage rifles must come with pretty rough bores!

I like how you posted all of your groups, and not just your .395" group.

Yea, but it was tempting though...and it was .354" BTW!

No problem Boba Fett, post up your targets once you get a chance!

I Picked up a box of A-MAX 168gr pills to try out for next range trip but it's probably going to have to wait till it cools down out here. Last trip was brutal. Constantly wiping my brow and I drank like 6 iced tea's plus lots of water just to stay cool and hydrated.

It was 115 today here in Phoenix AZ!

I have always heard they made great barrels.

I believe they make accurate rifles that are affordable and yes that requires a good enough barrel. But, for the sake of argument, I wouldn't call their barrels great. If you saw the chatter marks left from the button being pulled through the bore on this one you would understand. They don't lap the barrels then cut to size etc things that great barrel makers do to make a great barrel. With some "break in" things will smooth out and fouling will decrease.

I'm not ripping on my rifle or Savage for the money they have certainly delivered.

Walter Oakley stated...
For right out of the box shooting I don't think that can be beat. It takes me a while to work out the best way to shoot a rifle even if someone else had it set up well before I bought it. So a straight out of the box set of groups like you shot tell me you have one fine rifle. Just wait until you work the details out like the best ammo etc..

This was literally righ out of the box...........

I fired the the first 3 shots getting it zeroed at 100 yds. These are the 4th,5th,6th,7th,8th,9th,10th,11th and 12th shots ever fired from my Rem SPS V in 308 with the crappy stock. Three 3 shot groups with 3 different bullet weights.

I just picked up a Savage/Choate 10FP and will see if it can match it with it's first 12 shots down the tube. The Remington has proven to be and continues to be amazingly accurate for a cheap rifle, I hope the 10FP can hang with the 700. I'll find out in the next few days.:D
