Having a slight issue with my relatively new Taurus 605 (2" 357 mag).

[Please excuse my lack of knowledge of the technical names for the parts]

On the extractor, there is a small "button" in the center, which locks the cylinder into the frame, and also release the mechanism that prevents the trigger from being pulled while the cylinder is out (transfer bar?). This button is stuck in the depressed position, which means the cylinder will not lock into the frame and obviously the gun won't operate.

According to Taurus, its just dirty (roughly 150 rounds through the gun :scrutiny: ), and I need to soak the extractor in break free and the button will pop lose. Doesn't sound like it to me, but I'm trying it anyway.

My specific questions:
-Anyone experience this or have any idea how to fix it?
-How do you disassemble the cylinder/yoke assembly so I can remove the extractor and examine this stuff more closely?

Thanks!
Rob

Sounds to me like you might have a burr in there. If it's anything like my PT auto models, you'll find some small imperfections here and there. I suggest, if possible, get a hold if it with some soft faced pliers (tape covered) and give it a twist or two, might burnish the burr back and take care of all of these problems.

That is, if the soaking doesn't do it, I'd doubt it was the fouling issue, but it could be. Some ammo is notoriously gunky. Hope you don't have to send it back. I have read many good words about Taurus revolvers regarding price point and reliability, please followup such that we may learn from this issue.

There are two pistol smiths and any number of staff and members who could answer this at the Smithing board at www.taurusarmed.net and they'd be happy to give guidance.

Pics if available would help, but are not necessary.

thanks for the link!

The soaking away the dirt fix is not working, big suprise there...

There are many staff and members form there at that forum who are also here, but it's easier to get one on one consideration there.Sometimes the special type gun forums are the answer to a tough problem.

I go to the Ruger forums if things show up with the P series pistols.

I Know How to Fix This

I had the same problem with my 651. Read my last post.

After I removed the center pin I filed off the rough edges and polished it.
I have had ZERO problems since I "cleaned" the pin up a bit.

I called Taurus to "buy" a replacement pin and spring, the nice man took my order info. and then told be they were "out of stock". So, I filed and polished to "fix" this complaint.

I had the exact same thing happen to me about 2 weeks ago. I ended up dismanteling the extractor rod and had to drive that button out with a punch. I ended up taking a tapered knife sharpening rod to the hole and giving it a coupe of quick turns.

I had the same problem with a 41mag Taurus. When I called them they said I could send the gun to them or they would send me the pin, they acted as if this was something they had seen before. I had them send the pin and talked to a local gunsmith who said it was probably a burr. Acouple days later he had the gun ready, had polished off the burr and it worked fine. About two weeks later the new pin showed up so I put it away for the future which came about a month later when the same thing happened. Back to the gunsmith and he put in the new pin and it has been fine ever since. I did notice the origional pin was stainless steel and the replacement pin was carbon steel and heat treated. I am a toolmaker so this is something I can tell easily.
Touch the pin with a magnet and if it doesn't attract the pin it is stainless, call Taurus and ask if they have a carbon steel replacement pin for your model. Jim.

Sticky center pin

I tore apart my revolver thinking that it was just gunked up. After soaking all parts in solvent, I still have the problem with the center pin sticking. I've only put about 50 rounds through my revolver (Taurus M85 .38sp).

After reading all of the postings (great info by the way), I intend to remove the pin, take off the burrs, and polish it.

This sounds like a recurring problem with the Taurus light frames. I hope I don't get the same problem with my Judge revolver.

Center pin removal

The question of how to remove the center pin was asked on another board. I answered it there and thought I'd post it here also.

As always, empty the gun and work in a clean well lighted area.
I put a piece of white freezer paper on the kitchen counter top.
Using a pair of pliers hold the extractor rods knurled end, then twisted the cylinder (left hand thread) to loosen and then unscrew the rod.
I use a screwdriver to push the extractor out.

Then turn the extractor down to let the center pin spring come out and use a brass punch to push out the center pin, you may have to tap on the pin to get it out.

It'll probably be rough and dirty.

After you lightly file, and sand the rough edges smooth put a drop of lube on it and reassemble.

While you have the extractor removed you MAY want to remove the cylinder from the crane to clean it and the crane shaft area. BUT be sure you take note of the cylinder bushing direction. If you have it backwards during reassemble if won't go together correctly.
Also note that the cylinder has two locating pins that must line up with the extractor during reassembly.

Taurus M85UL Center Pin Problem Fixed

This weekend, I disassembled my .38 sp M85 Ultralite. It turns out the center pin was scored slightly and the hole in the extractor was slightly egg shaped. I used a fine file to smoothe out the center pin. I punched the center pin out (easier than I thought) and then inserted an awl into the hole and removed the deformity with mild pressure. To test it, I fired about 20
155grain shots throught it. It appears to be fixed.

More to come if necessary. Thanks for all of the links firinginfenton!
