Taurus 82

I have a 3" Taurus model 85 and have heard many good things about this model. But, I have heard very little about the model 82, which is a six shot, medium framed revolver.

Does anyone have any experience with this revolver?

Bout 10 years ago I got a 3" 82 and absolutely love it. Poor boys Model 10 if ya know what I mean. I've never had problem one with it. When the divorce went through it was one of the two that the ex specifically requested for her use, so I lost it in that sense, but still get to shoot it once or twice a year when we get together with the kids to do some shooting.
Worked fine for me. I prefer the 431 which I kept, just wish it also had a 3" barrel.

My first gun was a Taurus 82 which I got used. It had previously been a security company's gun. It was a good basic gun, though nothing special (though I think I could appreciate it much more now). About 6 months after buying it I bought a S&W 65LS because I wanted a .357mag and at the time I didn't think I'd own more than 2 or 3 handguns so I didn't see the need for two medium framed revolvers that could both shoot .38spl, thus in a moment of stupidity I sold it.:banghead:

They are good guns, reliable, relatively accurate and inexpensive. Also, I recently checked out a new one at a local gun store and the S&W M10 in the same display. Dry firing one had a slightly better DA trigger, the other a slightly better SA pull (I don't remember which had the better SA and which the better DA pull). Both had a decent finish but nothing like the older Smiths. Both seemed very well made.

I will own another 82 (or maybe the 83 with adjustable sights instead).

How does the 82 compare in size to a S&W 586?

The model 82 is slighty smaller than the 586,it's very'very close to the model 10.

Paw Daddy, I have experience with the Taurus .38
Special model 82, as well. My experience with this firearm
are not pleasant memories. After many, many year's of
being spoiled by the good double-actions of the K-L- and
N frame Smith's; the Taurus model 82 leaves a lot to be
desired. In looks only, it resembles a bull barrel Smith
& Wesson 4" barrel model 10; but the Taurus has about
a 25 lb. creepy double-action trigger pull. On a police
combat qualification course with the Taurus, I was able
to score only 82 point's; whereas I normally score 98-
100% with other firearms's. IMHO, the Taurus model
82 would best be left to a fisherman; to be used as
a boat anchor!

How does the 82 compare in size to a S&W 586?

As bpisler mentioned it is smaller. The 82 is similar to the S&W K-frames (M10, 13, 15, 64, 65, 66, 67) and smaller than the L-frames (586, 686, 581, 681).

Ala Dan, I think the current crop are very similar to the current crop of M10s. The triggers are about equal overall, with one having a slightly better DA and one a slightly better SA trigger (out of those I've checked out lately anyway). Of course, in both cases that is no where up to the smoothness and lightness of the old S&W triggers, but both are quite acceptable and could probably be smoothed out a bit more by a good smith.

I own a 3" heavy-barrelled Model 82, and it's been a fine handgun. The double-action trigger pull is pretty stout, though.

Yep, its been a long while since I took that Taurus model
82 for a test drive; and I'm sure they have improved!
