Taurus 85 +P Rated?

I've had several Taurus 85 revolvers. All of the stainless models were (IIRC) +P rated.
I currently own an 85 Multi-Alloy (aluminum frame, titanium cylinder barrel shroud) and an 851 (same gun, but all titanium frame and shouded hammer), both of which are rated for +P (per the manuals).
However, I don't recommend a steady diet of +P...for both the gun's longevity and your wallet.

Call Taurus at (305) 624-1115 with your s/n and they will answer that for you.
As for me, I would have no problem shooting a few +p's through it. Just don't make it a steady diet and beat it up needlessly.

IIRC, the earlier Model 85s are NOT rated for +P ammo; unfortunately, I have one of those. Definitely check with Taurus before you shoot a lot of +P ammo through the gun. No point in needlessly abusing it.

They will tell you year of manufacture and model number not if it's +P rated or not.
I have a Model 85 I bought new in 1989. I have fired a few +P through it but standard pressure loads are the usual diet. It's run 100% and still running fine.

Somewhere on taurus's website you will read that any revolver manufactured past 1994 is +P rated unless said otherwise. Such as the 856 in magnesium. 13oz, 6 shot jframe. I want.

Calling them and hcecking would be a good idea.
I have an older 20+year 85CH that has had a few thousand rounds of 158gr. LSWCHP +P ammo through it and the gun has had no issues.
Same can be said for those who have the older Rossi snubs and Taurus snubs as well.
The 158gr.LSWCHP is the yardstick against which other .38 Special rounds are judged.
The first guy shot with it weighed in at 300 pounds. He dropped like a sack of rocks and there was only one shot and hit. On him!
There are better rounds out there or ones that are good, but do not have the kick of that particular load.
Buffalo Bore makes a standard pressure 158gr. LSWCHP version. It has the +P velocity, even out of snubs, without the recoil of the +P version.

This was designed for police deparments who had personnel who were either issued the snub revolver or for those LEO who had bought there own guns and were department approved. This is some time ago, but the round proved it's worth to the LEO agencies that have it or did.

I bought a Taurus 856 last week that does NOT shooot +P ammo. The gun is identical to the 85 stainless, except they managed to put another round on the cylinder (hence the '6' at the end). It is also the new magnesium model (13.2 Oz. empty). It says right on the barrel that you cannot use +P ammo.
