Taurus 85?

My dad has a Taurus revolver which I believe to be a model 85. This would be the small framed snubby. Taurus states that the 85 is +P rated. However, there is no indication of +P on the actual firearm. Of course, the model number is not on the revolver either.

Question: is the Taurus 85 actually +P rated?

Early ones were not +P rated. I had one from the late 80's that was not. The new ones manufactured today are +P rated, but I personally wouldn't recommend a steady diet of +P for any J-Frame.

The model number should be stamped on the cylinder crane. Open the cylinder and check it out near the front of the cylinder.

I also have an all steel older one and it is not +P rated. You might be able to put a few higher +P rounds through it without too much damage but it is not recommended. I stick with the regular .38 Special rounds.

I just went to the Taurususa website to find out if my 85 is +P rated.

1. Under the Customer Care heading at the bottom of the page, you need to click on FAQ.
2. At the bottom of that page, there is 'Can you tell me.... Click on that.
3. Then type in your serial number. It will tell model and year of manufacture.
4. click on 'More information...'
5. click the tab for 'Technical Specs'

It will tell you everything about your gun.

If you shoot a steady diet of plus P in a non plus P weapon, then be ready for a problem. If you have a current gun for plus P. Blast away!!!

Got a jam-o-matic glock 32 that I'm ashamed to even attempt to sell! and so life goes on. Left Ashtabula in 64 and never looked back.

Unlike old Smiths and Colts that were produced back when regular ammo was the same pressure as the "+P" of today, the Taurus in question might have been made for the emasculated "standard" 38 of today.

Mine is a Mod 85SS3, now discontinued. That is the old skinny-barrel stainless 3", unlike the slab-sided full underlug they have today. I like the 3" better than the 2" because that extra inch helps anchor it in the IWB holster and it doesn't flip itself around. This is my primary carry gun, until I scratch up enough for Ruger LC9 or equivalent. I have full-size guns, but am not comfortable with carrying something that big/heavy.

I can't wait to retire in a couple of years so I can move out of here (southern Lorain County - 35mi southwest of Cleveland). I keep changing my mind, so who knows where I'll end up. Texas Hill Country is looking like a winner right now...

Hey thanks everyone for your help. The next time I drop by my parent's house I'll cross-reference their numbers to the Taurus site.

In the meantime, Cougar, Phoenix is the right place if you like 100+ degree days, six months out of the year. Sure, going swimming or golfing in January is awesome, but the pool water quickly turns into a sauna by June. If laying out by the pool in July with a sun that is strong enough to burn the hide right off you is your cup of tea, then Phoenix is the place for you. I should know, I was born and raised there.

Hey, even Satan has a summer home in hell because it's too hot in Phoenix for him.
