I know they are much maligned. But my son loves his and the ergonomics are good for both of our hands. Its basically a separately evolved Beretta. We got this one used at a fair price.
One issue the safety spring broke. Not the plunger spring but the one that affects pressure on the bottom of the safety lever. The top hat unscrewed from the frame and stuck with the grip screw.
First I noticed the slide and frame have different serial numbers. Not sure why or how on that one. It took four tries to get customer service on the phone. They got me a new top hat plus two springs. After they got here i had two plunger springs and a top hat. 4 more tires and i have two more springs coming for free. So hopefully it will be resolved soon. I want to like Taurus my first gun i bought was a 85 Ti and it was okay. I honestly wish i hadn't sold it.

Taurus was always ok w/me for parts. Not so ok on "send it back". Some went back twice. We sold a bunch, very low failure rate. None "replaced".

they were making the 85 and th 92 for a long time so they should have the bugs out. im not planning on having to ever send anything back. Id rather try and fix it myself since there is no warranty.

The reason the PT92 looks like a Beretta is because back in the old days Taurus bought the old Beretta tooling and started making The Taurus PT92 on the Beretta tooling. I would hope Taurus has upgraded their tooling over the years but who knows.

From what Ive read the PT92 is the most reliable and well thought of the Tauri. Some even rank it better than the Beretta being the Taurus has the frame mounted safety.

I’m in that camp. I rank my PT99 above the “real 92” that I had. All points comparable on accuracy, fit, finish, durability, but the sights and the safety push the Taurus up for the win.

As for the slide and frame being a mismatch, it could easily be that it was a simple parts swap. Slide gets banged up or something and as plentiful as they are they aren’t too bad to just buy a new one. Or if the gun was a .40 and you want a 9mm then just buy an upper and stick it on the frame. If it started out as a PT99 or pt101 and the sights got broken that would also explain it because the sights are hard to find so perhaps that’s the cause of the parts swap.

Yeah they used to have the lower mag release too like the s model 92. Pretty much what I found from reading up about them. The sorta did the same with smith and wesson. Except they used to be owned by them for a brief period.

Not really owned by S&W, but both companies were owned by the same parent company at the same time. From my experience, Taurus guns from that era though are among the best made of the bunch. I have seen it said that the 689 was the Taurus answer tot he Python and honestly the one I had was as nice as a python and a fraction of the price tag.

I bought a PT 92 in 1986 and it's still shooting with the original parts. Taurus caught a bad reputation for Customer Service and reliability, some deserved some not. These all were purchased prior to 1990 and none has needed repair. The current TX22 is a really good .22 and better than the Glock 44 "(Legendary?" People love to beat up Taurus even if they have never even held one. I'm not a "Brand Fan" of any particular line. I buy guns I like regardless who makes makes them. Some people cling to one maker so closely that they spurn all others. Glock owner's in particular. I own two Glocks and I won't buy any more because there are better guns out there. Anyway, back to the point. The 92 and 99 have served me well for decades. B Taurus.jpg IMG_3703.JPG
