How does one obtain a tax stamp to own a shotgun with a barrel under 18"? Please make the process clear. Can you saw a barrel off on a gun you already own after you have the stamp? Is there a limit at how far you can saw the barrel off after you have the stamp?

Moving this down to the NFA weapons section, for obvious reasons.

File a "Form 1" -- HERE -- if you want to make it yourself. If you want to buy one from a dealer or an private owner (in your state), you'd want a "Form 4."

You'll need some fingerprinting done and your Chief of Police, or Sheriff, etc. will have to sign the form as well. Send in the form and all the requested paperwork, plus $200.

Wait to get the form back with a canceled tax stamp.

THEN cut to your heart's content! :) No limit on length.

Sawed off shotguns or SBRs are legal with a ATF tax stamp, and a one time tax of $200 dollars. You must live in a state that allows such weapons, and submit a form for approval to the ATF before cutting down your barrel. Sam..you are a quick draw with the answers, beat me to that one. :)
