Teaching 8-12 year olds gun safety.

Just saw a most refreshing report on Fox News concerning a very foward thinking PD in Louisana. Any 8-12 year old can come down to the PD range to shoot BB, 22cal, or shotguns. If you do not own one of these, it will be provided. A Sgt. of the Cato parish department, explained that proper training and safety procedures taught at an early stage, will help to reduce the curiosity factor associated with firearms, and other problems as "kids will come into contact with guns during their lives." This kind of thinking, is not found in my State! The critics (and there are many) are P@##$^* on themselves as they are so mad... I say 3 cheers for this progressive department!

When it comes to handguns California legislation makes it illegal for children to even handle a handgun regardless if your teaching them saftey at the range. Your post definatley sheds more light on what happens when you pass insane laws.

I was taught about guns from the get-go. I was about a lot of stuff from the get-go. Parents taught because "family is designed to instruct, teach and lead by example".

This is GREAT, we even had this gun education in schools.

I saw the same piece. I believe if you take the mystery out of firearms, with exposure to them(after proper safety training), safety for kids is improved. I gave my young granddaughter a handgun for Christmas. She took the wrapping off, opened the box and walked over to me with it without touching it. "Grandpa will you check if it is loaded" was the 2nd thing out of her mouth(the first being a squeal "It's a gun!"). I checked it and handed it to her and asked "now what do you do"? Without batting an eye she said, "check it myself, even grandpa might make a mistake". She made a step closer in getting to use her present.

Cool. Shame more of this doesn't happen. I've been teaching my daughter gun safety for years. This year she got a BB gun, and after I took her trap shooting, she wants a shotgun too. Seriously though, I've always believed that kids should be taught from an early age. My brothers and I were, and we'd never touched Dad's gun's growing up.

1) It's the Caddo Parish Sherriff's Office. Not a police department.
2) It's not progressive. I learned gun safety from a Calcasieu Parish range officer in 1975, when I was 8.

Many Louisiana Parishes have similar programs, as well as free programs for women who are unfamiliar with guns to learn about them for self-defense.

We also teach hunter safety classes in many high schools.

We may be 49th in literacy, but we teach the important stuff!
