I recently had to contact my elected officials about a non-gun issue. So I looked them both up to see their voting record. The two in question are both anti-gun rights but big on gay rights. That got me thinking. Would it be possible to introduce a bill/law/ammendment that combined gun rights with gay rights? And I mean major legislation. We can carry without a permit and gays have a right to marry. In my case( Oregon ) mine are Ginny Burdick and Larry Galizio (I beieve). Would that work? Will they accept someting they don't want to get something they do? I'm ignorant of how the political process works but trying to learn. Is it hard to introduce bills/laws/ammendments?

Some states have 'single issue' rules that ban stuff like that. I happen to agree with the intent of the law, which was to prevent pork-barreling by having stuff like bridge-building in alaska added to the hurricane katrina relief bill. Note: My example was made up, but similar has happened.

Personally, I also prefer single-issue bills. When it comes to combining gay rights and gun rights into a single bill, you have to ask yourself if the gay rights crowd are more pro-gay then they are anti-gun, and if the gun rights pool are more gun rights than anti-gay.

The way I see it, you end up with something like 10 groups to consider in the legislature:

Neutral/unknown, both topics
Pro-Gun, Pro-Gay (supports bill)
Anti-Gun,Anti-Gay (opposed)

Pro-Gun+,Anti-Gay- (supports, with issues)
Pro-Gun-,Anti-Gay+ (opposed, would like to see the gun bill unpoisoned by gayrights)
Pro-Gun, Neutral (Supports, may be pissed off with 'multiple issues')

Anti-Gun+, Pro-Gay- (opposed)
Anti-Gun-, Pro-Gay+ (supports)
Anti-Gun, Neutral (opposed)

Neutral, Pro-Gay (support)
Neutral, Anti-Gay (opposed)

Just place each rep in the appropriate candidate and you'll get an approximate vote tally. Just beware of things like reps who really don't like mixed bills.
