I have noticed that Mossberg is discontinuing their bolt action slug guns in 2003. I was thinking about getting a bolt action slug gun for deer next season on the advice of a friend.

Are they any better than say an 870 with a rifled barrel?

Who else makes bolt action slug throwers??

Browning, Marlin and Savage all have or recently had BA slug guns. Tar Hunt makes expensive ones.

These are usually rifles, not smoothbores. They do a great job if the user does his/hers.

As for better, NO shotgun is a 30-06. But, these tend to be accurate when used within their range, call it 125 yards or less.

My deer hunting is done at much shorter range, where I hunt 50 yards is a long shot. A smoothbore 870 or one with a rifled choke tube works fine for me.

They're far from junk, and one set up with a decent scope that'll handle 12 gauge kick is a good whitetail gun for the East.

Be advised that slugs are ALL they're good for, these are a SP shotgun and not versatile.

HTH...
