Went to the gunshow here in Winston-Salem yesterday and one dealer had some Detonics on his table. These were brand new ones but I know nothing about Detonics. Can someone give me some insight? Especially about the funky rear sight which is at least .25 of a inch forward on the slide.

Detonics made 45acps in the 80's what you must have seen was a Combat Master which was made for concealed carry. the rear sight is set back from the hammer as it is for ease of thumb cocking. I know, I know but someone in Sales and Marketing must have thought it was a good idea. They were the precursor<sp?> of the Colt Officer Model.

They also made a Score Master which was a full size .45acp and was set up for Target shooting.

I've mever shoot one but from all I have heard they were good guns.

The Detonics is back in production, as Detonics USA. Jerry Ahern, who's Survivalist book series popularized Detonics, is the president of the company.

The Combat Master is a nice pistol, if it fits your hands. It's got some outdated ideas (i.e. the forward positioned rear sight and sloping rear of the slide is intended to facilitate thumbcocking a Condition 2 weapon) that limits aftermarket options. But all in all, I wouldn't mind having one if I wanted to invest the money to get it to work for me (building a beavertail so it wouldn't bite me).

As others have said for thumb cocking. See people back then weren't scared to carry hammer down and then cock the hammer. We could also, safely lower the hammer. Draw and cock the hammer while drawing was as common as L&C is now. Most guns had a hammer. Not that that little nub most 1911 have today. We also didn't need a surf board of a grip safety.
Dam I might go and get me one be cheaper that Correcting and fixing these new ones.
