Near the border of occupied Azlan and Mexico.
There is a very lonely K40 in my dealers case. It has been there for several years and he wants $499 for it.

I have several questions.

  • Any problems of note with the older K40's???

Is this a good price to pay for one???

Does the K40 have a fully supported chamber??

Any reports of KB's assiciated with this pistol???

Thanks in advance for your responses!!! :D

I paid $400 for my used Covert K40 Stainless. CDNN had them new for that price for a while.

I have read the older blued ones tended to lose the bluing quite fast.

Haven't heard of kBs but I am sure if you double load the charge, it will have no problem making a story of itself.

The one thing about reloads, it seems many on another forum (might have been TFL, can't remember) said the rounds had to be full length sized, the chamber of the Kahr was quite tight. But I did just shoot about 125 reloads (not my own) through my K40 with no failures of any kind.

For $500, I would spend a little more and get a micro Kahr or polymer version, or even the target/tactical version. Though it is your money, and if it has problems, I would hope both the shop and Kahr would help you out.

Hope this helps.

I don't recall any specific problems or heard of a rash of KBs with K40s, old or new. If the dealer has had that pistol for that long, I'd think he'd be ready to get it out of there. $499 sounds like a decent price if it's stainless and unused; if it's blued, you can get a new one (of recent manufacture ;) ) for that much, or a stainless one lightly used. I've noticed some all-steel pistols showing up used lately as people trade them in for the polymer models - I just bought a nice lightly-used stainless K9 with Trijicons for less than $550.

Having said all that, one thing I've noticed about prices - they don't much matter, really. If it's worth it to you, it's worth it. Somebody somewhere always gets a better deal.

Howdy,

I have a nickel K40 that I bought new in February 1998, not too long after the K40 showed up on the market. I have been very pleased with mine. It is totally reliable, accurate, easy to conceal, and fun to shoot.

I would say $499 is a good price if its stainless or nickel. If you like it, go for it, you will be happy.

I bought a new K40 Elite with night sights for $470 a few months ago. :D

Mine has been 100% reliable so far. Fit and finish could be better though.

I had a K40. Dad has it now. Great gun. Recoil spring didn't last long was only issue. Not a complaint but the only thing I could come up with to look for.

K series Kahrs are excellent and IMHO, can be compared to ANY gun made for quality, fit, finish etc etc etc....they are good.
The K40 has a tad of recoil coming from it...especially with good defensive ammo. Great gun...one of the best CCW's available.
Shoot well

I've got a K40. It was a relatively rare model with the Black-T finish from the factory. I had Kahr install the Elite trigger on it. It is reliable, reasonably accurate, and very, very slim. I do find that it has a fair bit of recoil. When shooting it, I feel impact on the web of my hand, between thumb and forefinger. I've spoken with others, some who feel the same about the recoil and others have no problem with it. So I think it may be a function of how it fits your hand. I've added a Harrts recoil reducer. With that, I can put about 70 rounds through it at a range session, but no more than that. YMMV.

My K9, on the other hand, has very little noticeable recoil.

I have one of the original satin nickel K40s and have had nothing but good results with it. It's really a superb carry piece. Beautiful trigger. Only problem I ever had with it was putting the recoil spring in backwards ONCE (don't know if things have changed with the design). The guide rod worked its way down into the spring, and I ended up with the rod sticking out the front of the slide. That was owner stupidity, as the manual clearly cautioned me not to do that. My only excuse is that it was 6AM and a little dark. The pistol was a real bear to disassemble in that state. Capacity's a little on the low side, but I compensate by carrying 3 extra magazines. It's capable of amazing accuracy if I don't try to stage the trigger and just pull straight through. Can't say if $499 is bad or not, but they're in high demand most places. If your locale has provision for concealed carry, I can't believe it's been there that long. I much prefer the full sized K40 to any of the "chopped" ones, but that's just me. One nice feaure is that the slide can be fairly easily stripped down a la Glock for cleaning. It's my favorite "little" pistol.

I have had a K40 in stainless for about 6 years and LOVE it. VERY accurate and dead on reliable.. Not one problem in all those years.

Entirely reliable, comfortable to shoot. Easy to carry, though it isn't light. Magazines are better designed than the K9/P9 equivalents, no problems with rounds coming loose. Trigger pull is light but long. I got Elite trigger installed, a little better. Accuracy isn't very good in my hands (i.e. groups about 50% larger than with P9) but others say it is good.

My wife took my K-40. I bought it used about a year back, the nickel version. It has been a great pistol, with absolutely no issues. Accurate, reliable, and very discrete. I still get to borrow it if I'm good. She is as good a shot with it as many people are with a 1911. That says a lot for a concealable weapon.

Any problems of note with the older K40's???
None that I know of.

Is this a good price to pay for one???
For a stainless or nickel finish, under $500 is good. I'd try to swing a deal if the pistol has been there that long.

Does the K40 have a fully supported chamber??
Yes, fully supported.

Any reports of KB's assiciated with this pistol???
None that I have heard of, but I have not read everything. I did research it heavily when I bought mine......oops the one that my wife took from me.
