Texas bank robber with toy gun slain

A 60-year-old woman dressed in black, armed with a toy gun and driving a motor home robbed a bank in east Texas on Thursday, then led police on a low-speed chase before she was shot and killed when she allegedly pointed her fake revolver at officers.
The woman was identified by Tyler, Texas, police as Peggy Jo Tallas, an ex-convict who became known as "Cowboy Bob" in 1992 after she pleaded guilty to robbing a bank in Mesquite, Texas, of $13,000 while dressed in a cowboy hat, sunglasses, a fake beard and mustache, and other Western attire.
Tallas was indicted in three other bank robberies that year, and state crime records indicate that she was convicted in 1977 of auto theft. n Thursday, four Tyler police officers shot at Tallas after she pointed what appeared to be a real gun at them, said Officer Don Martin, spokesman for the Tyler Police Department.
"It looked real. There was nothing to indicate it was a toy," Martin said.
Police said Tallas robbed the Guaranty Bank shortly after 11 a.m. Clutching a bank bag containing a dye pack that had exploded, she ran across a busy seven-lane road and jumped into her getaway vehicle, a Frontier motor home.
Witnesses yelled at the woman as she dodged traffic on foot while trailing smoke from the dye pack, a security device meant to mark stolen money. Hearing the emergency radio broadcast for help, off-duty Tyler police Sgts. John Brown and Gary Rice joined the chase. According to Brown, it ended after less than three miles with speeds never becoming "excessive."
The motor home stopped at a T intersection, then the "female suspect got up from the driver's seat, went back into the coach and pulled down the shades on the driver's side so you couldn't see inside," Martin said.
Officers crouched behind their vehicles, guns drawn, yelling for the woman to exit the motor home.
After five to 10 minutes, Brown said, Tallas stepped out of the motor home, pointed what appeared to be a real gun and "the officers shot her."
She collapsed and died on the street as police lobbed tear gas into her RV, believing others might be inside, according to Brown.

that is a very bizarre town......courthouse shooting then this. man, Tyler was not on the national map a few months ago.

I grew up there, and nothing too crazy ever happened, or at least I never remember hearing about it. I'm sure banks get robbed all the time, so I wouldn't classify that as too bizarre. The courthouse shooting was a little weird however.

OhMyGawd....

She had a TOY gun!

Gotta ban those right now....

The streets are going to run with blood.... :banghead:

****

Suicide by cop....

Unfortunate, but this gal appears to have been at least a little strange.

I mentioned this on another thread - my nephew, then about six, showed up at my parents house with a toy PPK/S that looked real enough to me that I checked it. No red front end in those days. (I have a real PPK/S.) Fooled me in bright lights until I tried to pull back the slide and check the chamber.... Weight was fairly close, too - lots of pot metal, I guess.

(The kids dad owned at least one gun at the time, and six-year-olds are likely to do anything. Had to be sure.)

Point being that the "it wasn't real" or "it wasn't loaded" crowd may not understand the situation. Even if it looks like Buck Rogers' ray gun.... (Come to think of it, an M16 kinda looks like a toy and.... :D )

To point a gun (fake or otherwise) at Texas 'Peace' officers... Yeah. Her nickname must have been 'Cowboy Stupid', or 'Cowboy Suicidal'. Did she have some mental defect, because that seems pretty rock dumb to rob a bank in a motor home... at the age of 60. I am sorry she died, but am more sad that some poor officer will have to live the rest of his life knowing that he shot a harmless old lady to death for no good reason other than she was an idiot.

Toys are Us! Toy guns = real guns - simple really, in perception.

No cop (or any of us I guess) is gonna decide toy or not - if threatened. Many BB guns are all but facsimiles of the real thing.

The bright thing to do in such cases, is drop said gun and show hands empty = might live. The dumb thing to do is point said ''toy'' at armed personnel - sorry - BANG. Too late.

Yes - stupid is as stupid does. Zero sympathy I have to say.

Harmless? She had just committed an armed robbery of a bank and had been convicted of bank robbery before, I wouldn't exactly call that harmless. She may have been waving a toy gun around when she got shot, but that story doesn't tell you that she did have a loaded .357 in the RV.

I run across articles like this from time to time and I'm just flat-out puzzled by whatever passes for thought process with these creatures.

Obviously her IQ never hit 50; she'd have sold.

Tyler isn't so very far from Corsicana. I used to train down there -- would be in town for 3 or 4 days at a time. In the 5 yrs I trained there, there was only one year in which there wasn't at least one homicide in town while I was there. About 90% of the officers I trained had been involved in shootings, and something like 75% of them had killed at least one goblin. :what:

I don't plan to retire there.

It's most likely become another methtown. Same thing up here in Nebraska. The small towns are overrun with Methaphetamine producers, pushers and addicts. If it's not meth it's mexicans...

One of the Dallas TV stations (NBC-5) showed video of the incident. The officers gave her every chance & verbal warning. The last thing she heard was an officer saying, "Ma'am. Don't waive that gun around like that..."

It was a good shoot. TPD did right just like they did when they cornered the courthouse shooter.

Two dead perps.....Tyler may not be a good place to be a bad guy after all...

I did, too, up through high school, and it was a pretty quiet town. My father was an officer in the largest bank, and I never heard of an attempted robbery.

Corsicana is a good town for fruit cakes.
