Looks like the lefties will not be exploiting Texans like the reporter in VA did earlier this year....

House votes to shield handgun owners' names 12:28 PM CDT

AUSTIN - The House overwhelmingly endorsed legislation to shield the identities of concealed-carry license owners Wednesday, with supporters saying concealed handgun owners deserve their privacy.

The bill, pushed by the National Rifle Association, was approved on a vote of 135-7 and expected to pass a final procedural vote Thursday and be sent to the Senate.

"These Texans have taken extraordinary steps to protect themselves and their families, and their privacy should be respected,” said Rep. Patrick Rose, D-Dripping Springs, the bill’s sponsor.

Supporters also say that the element of surprise in the “concealed” part of the law is lost if anyone can find out who has a license.

Open-records advocates argue that the concealed-handgun license will become the only license in Texas that is exempt from public information laws.

“Why would we treat this particular license as a particularly protected class?” said Rep. Lon Burnam, D-Fort Worth.

Currently, the Texas Department of Public Safety will respond to written, name-specific requests for whether an individual is licensed to carry but also gives the licensee the name of the person asking about them. Opponents of the new bill say that offers protection to license holders by giving them a heads-up if the knowledge of their license would be used by a potential attacker.

The legislation is being pushed nationwide by the National Rifle Association, which counts Texas among its friendlier states, and opposed by open-government advocates, such as news organizations.

Like the article says, anyone could request in writing your CHL status. The state was required to give them your name, county, gender, and a couple other things. And then the state had to notify you that someone had asked about you and give you their name and whatnot.

The longer I live there the more I like it.

The other thing is, criminals who suspected you owned a "gun collection" could ask the state, giving a false name, and then they'd get confirmation that yes, that IS the right house to break into (to steal valuable guns) while you and your family are on vacation.

Excellent bill!

OK, Lonny, I'll go for open records - if you vote to make Texas a Vermont-carry state. Otherwise, fuhgeddaboudit!

Other states to follow

From what I have researched, there are quite a few other States behind such bills as well. Be patient... common sense coming to a state near you.

Yes, because we should all get a heads up about a system that allows a potential attacker to "case" our ability to defend ourselves.

That aside, I think the biggest benefit is the inability of the media to take advantage of you for their own agenda. Further, it prevents your employer from finding out as well. In my book, both good things.

I'm a shameless name dropper and proud of it! :O) Gen. Joe Foss once told me, "...it would be better for us all if the rest of the country embraced the 2nd Amendment as Texas does." That's an exact quote on tape.

Our conversation covered a lot of bases, however the gist was that gun control goes against the grain here in the Lone Star state. True, I believe the General would be pleased with the Texas House measure and would warn us to maintain a defensive position as our rights are always under attack. My 2c's.

That is something that needs to be fixed here in Ohio.

Several of the leftist rags have published CCW License holders names, ages & county of residence. Three of the biggest offenders...Cleveland "Plain Dealer", Akron "Beacon-Journal" and Lake County "News-Herald".

Folks, does anyone know where I can get a summary, (as well as the precise location in Texas law) of all the new gun laws passed in TX this year? I know some of them relate to this thread, but there's also legislation regarding keeping guns in cars on employer's properties, extending your right to protect yourself to other areas than your home, and a couple of more, IIRC. Thanks so much in advance!
