I fly about 50 times time a year and almost always take my carry piece. I knew that the chance the airlines would eventually loose it was pretty good and it has finally happened. Everything was really screwed up yesterday anyway with the weather so when I Friday got home last night I was not to concerned that my bag didn't make it, it happens from time to time but it always shows up the next day. Well this time a day has gone by and still no luggage, now I am starting to get worried. I have to wait five days before I can file a claim.

Now the problem is I leave for Texas Friday and if they don't find it by them I will have to try and pick up a new case to ship a firearm in, luckily I do have another carry piece.

bummer. i know how you feel; airlines lose my luggage on a fairly regular basis. (3x this year already)

was it O'hare or Washington?

REB,my son works for a major airline.I relayed your situation to him.
He feels your bag will show up today or tomorrow. That this is not that uncommon(LOL),with weather problems.
If they don't find it by Monday then.......

File a theft report with local police (not the airport) and call the ATF.
Just remember Its not lost its stolen, I don't think they loose anything. If the airline actually lost all the luggage they claim they do it would be everywhere. Like leaving trails of bread crumbs around he tarmack.

So you're advocating that the OP file a false police report with not only the local PD, but the ATF as well?

Wow. Way to give incredibly bad advice. If the policy of the airlines is that you can file a claim in five days, then five days it is. What the OP can and probably should do is notify the local PD and the ATF and inform them of the situation, and ask them if there is anything he can do in the meantime in case the baggage doesn't show up after the airline-imposed five-day waiting period has elapsed.

That way, if the bags do turn out to be lost forever (for whatever reason) the OP can have his bases covered if the local PD, ATF, or even the airlines come to him asking "well, if you knew there was a firearm in the baggage, why didn't you do more to report the baggage missing?

See the difference? Doing it the way I outlined still allows the OP to cover his butt, while refraining from lying to the police and Feds about the disposition of his property.

wait a day or two. then start calling the airline. then when you can, file your claim. ive had lost bags for like 4 days...

It is probably not stolen, or even irretrievably lost. Most times it shows up in a few days. Luggage that is permanently lost is almost always due to not being labeled with the owners name so it can be tracked if the bar code falls off.

Odds are that his luggage was "misplaced." It's not lost, because someone knows where it is; the luggage probably did not make it on the same plane as REB. It may have been sent to the wrong city, or it may still be in the last city that REB flew through. But it will turn-up in the next day or two.

REB, keep hounding the airline. Nicely, of course.

Even if it has been stolen, odds are that it was stolen after the luggage was delivered to the baggage carousel in the bag claim area. It happens quite often. When was the last time that someone made you show your claim check?

Try more Distinctive Luggage!

This is one reason that I personally have gotten away from the ubiquitous Black Softsided Suitcase, and have gotten some exotic looking luggage. There are a BUNCH of different patterns out there to make your luggage stand out from the sea of Black, Dark Blue, and Burgundy on the carousel. I would steer away from the solid Red, as it has lately become somewhat popular, though it would be my first choice of the easily available solid colors.

No thief is going to take the only piece of Orange Plaid luggage out of the claim area, with the much greater chance that the real owner (namely ME) will see him and cry THIEF!

Also, they know that it is incredibly easy to simply claim mistaken identity when they get caught taking a Black bag. Heck, people really DO take the wrong luggage by mistake, it happens all the time.

Make your luggage distinctive, but without any overt Gun connotations. It really does help. It may even help to keep your luggage from getting lost, as it is far harder to lose a bright blue and pink bag on the tarmac than a Black or Navy Blue bag.

Futuristic

In over 20 years of regular flying (up to 100+ times per year) I've never had any bags lost. Only a few, maybe 4, get misplaced, incorrectly tagged or just 'missed the flight'. Almost always get them back in 2 days or less. Once I had a bag mismarked for an Air Canada flight when I was on Canadian Air. Took 6 months to get that one back. That was the days before computerized bag handling. Good luck, it'll probably turn up in short order.

I had all my clothes and research equipment lost while flying to Dominica. They found my luggage the day I left, and I was able to pick it up just in time to put it back through security and customs. Turns out it ended up in a closet on some other island, and only my incessant calling motivated them enough to find it.

It was through Atlanta and it was about as bad there yesterday as I have seen it since I started flying all the time about seven years ago. I have been lucky that I have never permanently lost a piece of luggage even flying as much as I do. It was a declared firearm but I am not sure they track them. If they don't come up with by Wednesday I will report it to the authorities when I file a claim with the airline.

On a side note while I have something else to carry I don't have another good CCW holster. I guess I need to plan better for a backup.

They found it!!! I went on line this morning to check the status and it showed my bag had been found and would be delivered by 4:00pm yesterday. Well obviously it wasn't delved yesterday so I called the delivery company they use and they had my luggage but were so backed up yesterday they didn't get to mine. Not to surprising consider I live a good 45 minutes from the airport. Anyway the delivered it a little while ago and life is good!

The airlines lost my luggage once. They said it was because of the connecting flight.

................however, I was on a non-connecting flight.

So there was no connecting flight. I just got on one plane and 4 hrs later was in CA.....without my luggage.

I was standing at the carousel with Bill Kazmaier, the world's strongest man Champion. It was pretty funny. He was really cool, that guy is so huge it's not even funny. When he got on the plane, people were like, "Whoa, that dude's huge." In person, his back is like 4 feet wide. I said, if there's any terrorists on board, I'll let him fight them. We chatted awhile and he was really cool.

But his luggage arrived, and mine didn't. It took them 3 days, but they drove it out to me on base.

I fly a lot and have had my bags delayed many times. I pack a sidearm in my suitcase and worry every time I go to the luggage carousel and breathe a sigh of relief when I see the bag. I never take anything with sentimental value or expensive to replace, and I use a cheap looking bag that is not black as suggested by another commenter.
