Does anyone know anything about the Chapman Academy. I've been trying to call or email them for two months. I've left messages but haven't received any response. Their web site doesn't even function correctly. I'm intrested in attending an Alumni event.

I've done their Advanced Combat Handgun course (recommended to me by Massad Ayoob), and found it excellent. However, their instructor had a heart attack or stroke last year, and I'm not sure whether or not they're still functioning. Ray Chapman retired some years ago.

Chapman Academy sent me an email today. They are up an running.

Thanks

I took the five-day intro Defensive Pistol class there three years ago. Very highly recommended. Comprehensive and extremely ammo-intensive. They recommend bringing 1700 rds. of ammo. Take more. I went through 2300+.

The main reason for the problems with the web site and contact will be that John Skaggs, the hand-picked successor of Ray Chapman and director of the Academy suffered a severe stroke last year. He is recovering, but it may be some time yet before he is able to resume full-time teaching and administration. From what I understand, the day-to-day operation has been in the hands of adjunct instructors and part-time staff.

I would have no qualms whatever about training under anyone John has vetted to teach. Like John, they would be consumate professionals and skilled teachers. In my five days under his tutelage, I learned more about how to use a handgun quickly, accurately, and safely than I had in all of the years previous. He is a perceptive and patient teacher who will find a way to bring out the best that you are capable of, and take that to the next level.

I'm sure that all of us here at The High Road will join me in wishing John a full and speedy recovery.
