I posted this to a social media site. Feel free to rip it to shreds as long as you back up your criticism so I can refine my argument. :D

The NRA's proposal of enabling retired police and armed force members to volunteer in the halls of schools has drawn much objection. But look at it from another angle: What about the chance these upstanding citizens will have to make lasting impressions in the lives of young people in our schools? Modeling responsible behavior and community service are just a few positive things I can see resulting from this. For the volunteers mentioned above, it may open up channels to communicate and connect with the younger generations they may have not otherwise been able to identify with or engage. I know that these volunteers will take their duty seriously, otherwise why would they volunteer? This sense of duty could certainly help boost the morale and health of some of these volunteers.(http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/19/for-a-healthy-retirement-keep-working/) For the students, they may find that they can trust one of these people when they don't trust anyone else, not even their teachers. This plan could change lives for better in more ways than one and it would benefit not only young people, but the volunteers watching over them as well.
