Forrest Carter authored "Gone to Texas", the book "The Outlaw Josey Wales" is based upon. I have read this book and don't remember too many of the movie's lines being in the book. It is the ONLY book I have ever read that I thought the movie was superior to. I'm sure the fact that I'd seen the movie at least 20 times before I read the book was not a factor here! It is my favorite movie of all time.
