The reflex sight that never gets discussed. The Meprolight Reflex Sight...anyone?

I always hear Aimpoint, Eotech, and the less expensive companies, but nobody ever mentions Meprolight, which seems like it might be very good?

Yes, its slightly more than an Eotech or Aimpoint, but it doesn't run on batteries AT ALL, just like an ACOG. So what's wrong with? Is the 5.5 MOA dot too big? Nobody seems to talk about them.

BTW, it is the official reflex sight of the Israel Defense Forces, they mount them to flattop M4s as well as employ unique carry handle mounts for all of their surplus M16A1s and M16A2s.

If it works well for the IDF, why not for us? Any user opinions?

I actually handled one for the first time today. My first impression is that it's a copy of the new Trijicon RX30 Reflex, but somewhat less nicely finished (even though I know it came out before the RX30). The owner didn't have much to say about it, good or bad. It seems to fall into the same category as stuff like the Zeiss Z-Point: no one really has one because the demand isn't there, and the demand isn't there because they're not widely known. It's all a vicious marketing circle in a sense, I suspect.

I've played with one, and liked it.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to shoot with it. I just stuck it on my 16" AR and looked through it in various ways. I'd like an opportunity to really use one.

not having to deal with batteries would be a nice feature. i know that kimber sells only meprolight sights with their guns and kimber has high quality standards. i would sure like to try one of their reflex sights!

What do you do with them after 10 - 12 years when the Tritium dies?

I called Kimber about replacing the Tritium in a set of Meprolite sights and they told me to throw them away and buy new ones!

They said the sights are all made in Israel, and they don't mess with radioactive elements here in the U.S.A. due to the laws.

I personally love tritium powered sights, but you are right. Down the road I will face them fading in brightness. Ultimately options change so fast in that market, I assume I will have new and unforeseen options by then that I may prefer. That is my rationale anyway.

Thats too bad.

Trijicon will replace the tritium vial in their sites for $17.00 a dot. That translates into a $51.00 refresher for a set of $125.00 pistol sights after 12-15 years.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I don't see the aversion to batteries, since battery life in an Aimpoint Micro lists in years. Change em out with your smoke alarm batteries yearly, and you're good to go.

Ehh, it seemed pretty comparable to the Trijicon, which is to say that the window still is pretty dark. IMO while I'd prefer a brighter dot, the bigger issue for me is the darkness of the lens-while I can handle a dimmer dot, I dislike not having as clear a view of the target as with just plain eyes.
