The TV Show "Wanted Dead or Alive"

What we have here is not thread drift, it’s thread expansion. Completely proper when it comes to early western heroes in my book. In that vein which sidekicks/second fiddles did you love or despise?

I’ll alternate some of mine. One of my favorites was Shotgun Gibbs on Wyatt Earp. One tough hombre who could not decide which he loved more, his mule or his shotgun.

All time worst. Chester on Gunsmoke. Mewling, spineless deputy who should have been canned the first time he whined for Mr. Dillon to do his job for him. Festus was great though the later years of the show got a bit soap opry.

Cisco Kid. Yes, Pancho was a fool, but he was so loyal and lovable you forgave his foibles.

The Rifleman. Every time son Mark got in a life-threatening pickle I hoped Lucas would be too late to save him. Bad actor or bad scripts I don’t know. Johnny Crawford turned out pretty amazing in later real life though. It’s just his role I hate.

Lawman. Young deputy Johnny McKay was taught the ropes by wise marshal Dan Troop. Unlike most in that role, he was not just a foil for the star. They were both competent men. One a little green, but a quick study.

Okay, just one more. Jingles on Wild Bill Hickok. A not funny tub ‘o lard torturing his horse weekly. Andy Divine made up for it by hosting a great Saturday morning kid’s show.

Who did you love or hate? Was there ever a sidekick who outshone the star?
