There are lots of ways to kill a dog. . . Here in WA a while ago, someone was throwing poisoned meat over fences containing dogs. Would you feel justified in shooting that person? I wouldn't. . . tho I would probably like to. Now, if someone SHOOTS my dog, in my proximity, that's another issue. Obviously (to me), that person is eliminating my obvious line of defense (as I CC, my real line of defense isn't visible) as a precursor to attacking me and mine.
No hidden meaning, no wink wink, nudge nudge, a dog is one of the most common defensive tools by a lot of people. The fact that they're furry, loving, and fun is just another reason to have them. But most "dog histories" indicate that's where dogs came from in the first place. . . we tamed wolves to warn and protect the camp when we gathered around fires to sleep.
