Yesterday, June 6th, I served on a panel discussion at Butler University in Indianapolis for a state-wide youth leadership forum (they bring in different professionals and the kids ask questions and learn more about their gigs). The person in charge was a young & nubilly associate at a large white shoe firm here and they needed a tilecrawler to serve as designated target for the prosecutors and police and for some unknown reason (hmmm, what could it have been? If only we knew El Tejon's weakness) I went down for a rainy afternoon of catching spears and dinner and drinks later.
The questions I received were seemingly taken from THR. The kids (high skul sophomores, approx. 15-16) wanted to know about the Patriot Act, the War on Some Drugs, mandatory sentencing, etc. I was taken aback. I had anticipated questions about "Law & Order" or "The Practice."
After the Q&A forum, a few of the young men approached men and started to ask questions about firearms law, what guns I had, and where I went hunting. I discovered more than a few were active shooters with Scouts, FFA or their fathers' clubs.
After the forum the kids were given a case to litigate. A murder from Joejuh involving a Rem 700DBM. Serving as an advisor to the tilecrawler groups, I started to point out the technical aspect of the rifle (they found our guy's fingerprints on the cartridges, but he was not the shooter, prosecution claimed he supplied weapon), but in both groups, I was cut off as someone spoke out to advise ME of how the weapon functioned.
I was astounded at the quality of individual I was dealing with. Granted I was out of my usual circle of contacts (as you can imagine), but it is good to know that they are there even if we are not fully aware of them. There is always hope.
