Thinking about a Browning BAR Safari in 308...opinions?

Anybody have one...or even a BAR in 308 (the only difference is the steel receiver on the Safari)?

I'm thinking it would make a good hunting rifle...even though it is a bit heavy.

You can do a search on here and find all kinds of information on the BAR. It's really about been chewed to death. The long and short of it is most people have good opinions and there are a few that have had problems.

I fall into the "problems" category. I bought a brand new Safari grade in .25-06 and I had SERIOUS accuracy problems with it. It wouldn't group at all. It would be on one side of the paper one shot and the total opposite the next shot. I went out and bought a lead sled thinking it was shooter-related. Still did the same thing. I ended up selling it for a song to a buddy who said he could fix it. He's still having problems. It was a beautiful rifle, but for me I don't care how pretty it is. If it won't shoot like it's supposed to, I won't keep it.

I have the .308 and 300WSM BARs in the lightweight stalker model. I didn't go Safari specifically because I bought them to hunt. The .308 doesn't have the BOSS. Shoots good, not spectacular with various reloads and factory. Had the trigger system go bad. The 300WSM with BOSS is spectacularly accurate. I did get the new CR BOSS this year and have not shot it yet.

I consider them great hunting guns, and have very fast second and third shots for woods hunting.

Good friend has one in .338. After shooting his I really want to find a left hand version of the .300 win mag longtrac. Beautiful guns. Fairly spendy tho.
