This is a huge lawsuit for the PD...

Just something to throw into the mix here:

Indiana is a "Licensed CCW/OCW" state. You need an Indiana License to Carry Handguns in order to carry, openly or concealed, a handgun. It's easy to get statewide, and only costs $30, and now you can get a lifetime permit for anywhere from 75 to 125 dollars (I haven't checked the exact figure).

The men ran back into the house as Kokot and Thomas approached. Thomas said he thought he heard shots coming from inside the house, but didn’t call for backup before he and Kokot got out of the squad car.

...

Thomas claimed since he was the only officer that worked the 6 p.m to 2 a.m. “Tango” shift for the department, he was a supervisory officer with authority to approve civilian ride-alongs. He also said his son and ex-wife had accompanied him, and carried firearms, on ride-alongs with him in the past.
Logical disconnect: if Thomas was the only officer working the shift, exactly how might he have been able to call for backup? I gotta think it takes more than the 2 or 3 minutes alluded to in the article for an off-duty officer to be awakened at midnight, get dressed and equipped, stumble out the door half asleep, and find his way to wherever the situation is unfolding.

Unless it's a VERY small town.

He didn't call for backup because there wasn't any? Sounds logical.

Could easily be that he figured that by the time the dispatcher got hold of some help, it would be too late to do any good.

Cops make decisions in seconds that the 20/20 hindsighters take weeks and months to second-guess.

That still does not justify his actions. He opened up the city to a whole bunch of lawsuits due to this mans actions. And to top it off the man in question was fired due to allegations of abuse. Perhaps then he should have chosen his "backup" a little more wisely. I am sure a few of the LEOs on this board would probably exercise their discretion and choose someone who was not fired for abuse rather than someone else.

If he does not like the idea of not having backup I am sure he could find another law enforcement job or some other line of work.
