So, i'm thinking my next firearm is going to be one I build.

My local muzzle shop ( Gunworks) has a SxS Cap/Hammer 28" DIY kit for about $390.

Anyone else ever done one of these ?

Please feel free to talk me in ( or out ) of this'n.

I've never used a muzzle loading shotgun before ? I assume this is just a larger smoothbore SxS ?

The thought of this really tickles me, but i've never : A. Built a BP gun before, and B. Used a BP muzzleloading shotgun before.

I'm pretty handy with assembly and woodworking- so that part doesn't really bother me. I'm sure I'd have to have the bluing done though !

bp shotgun

Bp shotguns are alot of fun, I built from scratch except for the barrel blank, a flintlock 13" 12 gauge pistol! - it's my ultimate hand cannon, for now, (yes I am planning something bigger, 1" bore!!)

This is a flintlock I built some years a go.Muzzleloading shot guns will perform as well as modern shotguns.

This is another view. The Barrels wher originaly breach loaders converted to Muzzleloaders.the top Tang is a piece of Angle Steel cut to shape. The Timber is a Branch off a Pear Tree that had been in my garage for years. The Furniture is made from Mild Steel Plate.

The Locks where lost wax Castings produced by E J Blackley and son here in England. The Springs and internals I made to fit.It took me a winter to make (3 Months).Over the years it has matured and started to look the part. She Shoots good and is a 10 bore.

blarby, who made the kit? That will have a lot to do with how good a product can be assembled from it.

Patocazador,The Gun Barrels are original breach loading that where given to me.It was necessary to make and fit sleeves into the Chambers having first made a tool to square off the Forcing cones.I then Threaded the breaches and made and fitted Breach Plugs, these trapped in the sleeves that had been epoxy fixed.E J Blackley takes impressions from Original parts using the Lost Wax method. His castings have all the details of the originals. The ones for this gun are copies of Mortimer Lock Parts, these come as castings or he will build complete Locks.I opted for the former for financial reasons.

AJumbo, you got me guessing,I had to look Sapient Pearwood up.A sort of Mythical Timber that cant be lost.My Gun is just plain ordinary everyday Pearwood.
Regards.
