With all the recent talk of Obama running for office, I've heard many here, and a few other 2A communities champion Mccain, the logic being because hes teh lesser of the two evils in regards to our guns. I never agreed witht his line of logic, as it shows two things in my mind: A. weakness. Where are our canidates? Where is our strength? If we have no one we can run, then we have less power and few fence sitters will join a dying cause. B. it shows we can be bought. Just appear to support us more than the other guy. Neither of those is appealing to me.

So what about option 3? Third party perhaps? No, I have no misplaced belief that the next president will be a 3rd party canidate. But we CAN still come out on top. If we showed our support for a third party canidate we would show that not only can we not be bought, but we can be a very powerful ally. There are upwards of 90,000,000 gun owners in america. That is a powerful voting base.

Of course what do I know? I'm a Lcpl in the Corps, not a polisci expert.
 
We're not entirely without options--I consider Tancredo one--but certainly the paucity of viable and credible choices is symptomatic of the state of the Republican Party--and the Republic--after a long dark night with the Bushes. There's been a pretty serious unraveling.

Either one will pursue more violations to the Bill of Rights and make socialists proud. Vote 3rd party even if they don't have a chance. At least you can say you knew the difference and did the right thing.

That I can, but it will be of little consolation in my prison cell (Though I'm being extreme at the moment). I think a coordination of our efforts is in order to maximize our effectiveness.
 
As far as it goes now, Im voting for Ron Paul. Ive been looking at his stuff for over an hour now and I really like what he has to say. He understands that states have rights too.
 
Newt is our best hope as a GOP candidate.

My gut says that McCain will probably win in the primaries. He's done the right things in the last year on an organization level.

I won't vote for McCain in the GOP primaries. But if it comes down to a Democrat like Hillary or McCain, I'll grit my teeth and vote for McCain.

Richardson would be a very good candidate for the Dems in a general election. But he is roundly despised by the far left and they run the primaries. Just like the far right runs the GOP primaries. Which is why a certain Mayor from NYC has no chance to win the GOP primary no matter how well he might do in a general election. Step one, you HAVE to win your primary! Well, unless you go the Lieberman route but that would be TOTALLY unprecedented in American presidential politics. Very close to impossible.

The time to make a statement is in the primaries. That is where you vote your heart. The general election is where you suck it up and try to limit the damage.

My fear is that both the Republican and Democrat candidates will be so bad that it will be be a moot point which one can do more damage. I won't vote for McCain in the general election though.

I'm sorry, but compared to Obama, John McCain is the NRA's guardian angel. If it's McCain vs. Obama, any firearm owner that throws their vote away on a third party is insane.

Except for that little bit where he stops the NRA from advocating for a candidate within 60 days of an election with his "Campaign Finance Reform"... not to mention reporting requirements that burden organizations that collect small donations from many people while making life easy for organizations that are financed by a few billionaires.
 
Definitely go with Ron Paul in the primary. Every single person who cares about RKBA has a grave duty to support him.

If he doesn't win the nomination, then it's Libertarian for me. Will that mean I threw my vote away? No. It will mean that all the gun owners who didn't vote Libertarian threw their votes away on a party that doesn't give a hoot about the RKBA.

The only reason that the truly pro-gun Libertarian party cannot win is because gun owners don't think it can win.

Seriously though I will probably be voting Libertarian for the first time. I no longer can hold my nose when I vote. I have felt ashamed for the fact that I had to vote for Bush. I would vote for Ron Paul though.

In the end I will probably vote my conscious now. Either way my vote will be cancelled out here in Illinois by all the Democrats.
 
If Paul did miraculously get the nomination, I would be happier than a fat kid with a cake. Saying that, I highly doubt it will happen. His Libertarian connections, while glorious in my opinion, will leave him looking a bit too radical to go anywhere. Plus, he has no name recognition with the average voter.

I think Tancredo stands a better chance and I like what he has to say.

Really, if Gingrich, Paul, or Tancredo win the Republican nomination, I will be content. I think McCain is going to die with the Iraq Troop Surge, no matter how good or bad the idea is, unless we see a miraculous turn-around in the next year. Giuliani, as said before, is far to much of a centrist to make it out of the primaries.

I fear Mitt Romney, more than anyone, winning the primaries. He is the big-name conservative candidate who can pull the right wing voters. Yes, he may claim to be conservative, but anyone that supported the AWB and Brady Bill is a threat to my liberty, in my opinion. Not too mention his flip-flopping on other issues, as well...

Or it could be that the Libertarian party routinely nominates candidates that couldn't survive a fraction of the scrutiny afforded to any serious Presidential candidate and then treats the whole thing as a half-baked publicity stunt.

I'd love to believe that the only problem the Libertarian party has is convincing people to vote for them; but that is a way optimistic view that overlooks serious issues within the party.
