“If criminals, drug cartels and extremists had a seat at the policy writing table they couldn’t have come up with a better amendment,” Acevedo wrote. “Through this amendment we are facilitating the victimization of people we are sworn to serve, protect and lead.”

Flanked by about a dozen law enforcement leaders from around the state, Acevedo said Wednesday that the legislation would "handcuff" police officers, endangering both them and the communities they protect. "It absolutely allows criminals to carry a gun with impunity," he said.

Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo is standing by the comments he made Thursday at a state Senate hearing. Acevedo spoke against a Senate bill that would let people carry guns on college campuses.

“Now we’re going to create an environment where people are lawfully allowed to carry firearms on campus,” he said. “We’re potentially turning sexual assault victims – who we have a lot of resources to help these young people…through our victims services and so forth – into potentially murder victims.”

Police sent a strong message to the Legislature’s Republican majority that they will keep up the pressure.

“You can’t be the party of law and order and not listen to us,” Acevedo said. “If it doesn’t get removed, the only responsible thing to do is for the governor to veto.”

*and lead.

Hmmm...I think not, Generalissimo Acevedo. The mayor leads, if anyone, and you're to be his puppy dog. But, by all means, lavish Austin tech-boom tax dollars on Open Carry Texas by way of civil rights lawsuits and see where it gets you vs. them. Heck, I bet his local prosecutors start getting sanctioned by the third time he pulls this stunt (detaining & interrogating those going about their business peaceably and in accordance with the law), and we'll see just how obedient they are when their own reputations are on the line.

Just think how purple he'll be in two years when open carry has yielded no problems for a solid year, and constitutional carry is up for a vote. We'll play their incrementalist game all the way back to where we started, and signs are the slope isn't as steep as it once was (still slippery, though)

I have no doubt that he is a Believer In What He Says, and that he works for/is supported by like-minded folk. I also have no doubt that I fundamentally disagree with his point of view.

The question is how to use this to alienate him from some element of his base of support. There are probably elements of his base that resonate with his position, and some that are followers of his party and not specifically anti-RKBA. So - how to reach those that are supportive of the RKBA?

Moreover, where are the Texas LEO voices of opposition to his point of view? I've not seen any CLEO stand up and state that Acevedo doesn't speak for the LEO community....

I don't know who the Chief thinks he's talking about. These aren't cartoon Frats or childish dorm rats or disaffected adolescents. So-called "campus carry" only removes the prohibition on college campuses that applies to adults with state issued carry permits that have met all of the state requirements to be issued the carry permit. They don't act like campus stalkers when they set foot on campus and campus stalkers don't comply with the law whether they're on or off campus. This is a clear red herring scare tactic and the Chief should be called out on it.

Texas THR members should go to every media outlet the Chief's statement is being repeated and point this out.

"You can't be the party of law and order and not listen to us.", Acevedo said.

Wow, is this guy deluded or what? He makes it sound like anyone with a gun, besides law enforcement, is already set on some sort of criminal activity and a threat to society. And even more inane he sees himself as the one who can lead Texas into this gun-free Utopia he believes in.

Wow, what an idiot.
