Titan Gun Vault

Does anyone own one of these? I really like the idea behind this but $250 for a handgun safe is way too much comparing to gunvault or the v-line handgun safe. Does anyone know something similar to this but cheaper? The gunvault is too big for me to bolt it down to my nightstand. Thanks

I'm going to bump this. I've been thinking about the Titan Gun Vault, too. but, now it costs $300! Before I spend that kind of money on a metal security box, I'd like to hear from some people who have actually used it. I have been able to find ZERO reviews of it online.

I should add, I have spoken to the inventor and owner of the company online. He seemed like a real nice guy who knows his stuff. I was hoping to meet him at the SHOT Show this year, but he didn't go.

I have not used the Titan. I think you need to pull open the door with your hand and the holster pulls out with it on a cantilever mechanism. When you close the door you need to remember to re-lock it since it doesn't appear to use the spring latch option that Simplex offers. When he closes the door he turns the knob left to re-lock it. Only weighs 10 lbs and is constructed of 14 gauge steel. I think that's a little heavier than the Gunvaults. I think some of the added costs are due to the various mounting plates. The portability seems like a nice feature if you are looking for that.

Maybe you could secure it to your bed or the floor instead of your nightstand. Here's my handgun safe secured to my bed.

Since I first posted I have had a chance to look at the the Titan first hand. Unfortunately, the closest store to me is about 30 miles away and it took me over 2 hours to drive that in LA traffic. The bottom line is, I only got to look at it for about 10 minutes before the store closed.

Some observations:

The Gun Vault was actually fairly easy to dismount from its mounting plate. Getting it back on was harder.

The metal used is not terribly thick. Bad for security, but a plus if you are planning to dismount the safe often and transport it.

I only got to use it a couple of times, but the Simplex lock was a bit harder to use than I envisioned. It actually took the salesman 3 tries to get it open.

I'm not sure how they did it in the video, but in the model I tried the separate ammo compartment door did not automatically fly open. There was no magazine in it, so not sure if it would have popped up, too.

Bottom line is I liked the Titan. But, I think it is pricey. I really wish I had more time to examine it, but the salesmen wanted to go home. Like I said, I have spoken to the inventor of the Titan twice, and he seems like a very nice, intelligent guy. Everything he said to me seemed like no b.s. (meaning he didn't seem like a mall ninja gun shop commando).

Since you got to look at it first hand, do you think with the way the door overlaps the box would make it easier to pry or hammer open by deforming the door? Not really a concern with your kids, but maybe with a thief.

The Simplex lock should not be that difficult to open. The salesman must not have entered the combination correctly. If you use 2 buttons simultaneously in the combination it might take a little practice to coordinate your fingers. One you do it a few times it's pretty easy to be consistent.

I have one that opens the "wide" way and has the same lock. Fort Knox sells them and they are $150, 10 ga steel and nice. The one I bought looks the same, but is lighter steel and was only $75.

FAS1, sorry, like I said my look at the safe was so rushed I really didn't get a chance to examine it properly from a security point of view. I was mainly looking to see if it would work in my application (mainly car), and see how it worked mechanically.

To be honest with you, I think if you took the safe with you to your garage, and went at it with a hammer or hack saw, you could get into the safe fairly easily. It's more of a locked metal box or locker than a safe. Good enough to keep kids out and the fast gun grab, not a determined thief.
