In the era of instant background checks why does the process take so long?

I understand that if you apply as an individual the FBI needs time to run your fingerprints.

I understand they must review your trust / corporation to make sure it is legitimate.

I also understand it may take a while before they can even begin to review your paperwork.

But still, once they get to your application why does it take months and not hours?

I haven't been able to find any explanation on the Internet nor have any of the gunstore employees to whom I've spoken have any visibility on the matter.

Thanks in advance.

It probably does actually take them only a few hours. It just takes them months to getting around to yours. The rest of the time it's just sitting in one queue or another.

That'd be my guess anyway.

It takes a while because it's sitting in the queue at the FBI. Remember, they're not just doing your background check on the F1 or F4, they're also doing the ones for people applying to be cops, people getting security clearances, etc. etc. etc. So, yours goes to the end of that line.
