Gun trumps knife in robbery attempt

By News Sentinel staff
February 21, 2003

An alleged Thursday night robbery attempt was foiled by superior weaponry when a knife-wielding intruder was stopped by two gunshots.

A clerk's husband at the Merita Bread Bakery Outlet on Greenway Drive shot the unidentified intruder twice, apparently in the arm and leg, according to Knoxville Police Lt. David Rousch.

James Petty, 64, was helping his wife, Wanda clean up and close the store when a man entered about 5:30 p.m. and demanded money, Rousch said.

As the suspect attacked James Petty, he drew a firearm and fired in self-defense, Rousch said.

Officers said Petty has a permit to carry the weapon.

The suspect's injuries were not believed to be life-threatening, and he was transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Charges are pending.

This reminds me of the scene in "Indiana Jones" where the guy's just got a big sword and is swinging it around... And Jones shoots him..

Do you need a permit to carry in your own bidness in the Land of Orange?

Negatory...you can carry on private property without a permit.

The guy was not an employee, just present to pick up the wife...that would make the carry permit relevant.

Good guys 1, bad guys 0. I love living in a state where nobody bats an eye when a bad guy gets double-tapped by a citizen.
