Today, I took my newly purchased Century Arms WASR-2 (5.45x39mm) out to shoot at Manatee Gun and Archery Club. I have to say that the accuracy is way better than I thought. I had no problems standing (a little shaky too) and hitting an empty water jug at 50 yards. The recoil is very minimal, even with the gun being as light as it is. The furniture was a little lacking (as expected), but with some oil I got the handguard to look pretty decent. I swear the gun gets better with MORE use. Overall, a great buy!

I know, the range report is a little lacking, but here are some pics of the day.

Thanks for the pictures! I know what you mean about the rough furniture.

So were you just running the steel mag that came with the rifle? Kinds of ammo?

I haven't even gotten mine to the range yet and already I'm plotting to get some kind of Russian siderail optic and a boatload of magazines. Keep having to stop myself from buying a Soviet AK-74 stock set off ebay...

I used the poly mag most of the time. It is way easier to load. The ammo I was using was using this surplus ammo.

I plan on eventually replacing the furniture with the Tapco plastic furniture and mounting some kind of optic on it.

You will really enjoy it when you take it out.

Nice pics! The 308 looks pretty sweet.

Hey did you blot out your face so when you run for Congress someday they can't use these pics against you?

Which one? The DPMS or the Savage?

The DPMS. I tell people DPMS is the best kept secret for .308s. Their AR-15s are pretty nice too.

So what is going on with the face editing?

Are you "not out of the closet" about 2nd amendment pride or what? Are you worried about the ATF finally being able to add a photo to your file? Or is this about your 2nd grade teaching job? :uhoh:

Just wondering. I do think some guys are too eager to post pics of themselves and their girlfriends/wives (especially foolish in this day and age) but previously I never saw a THR member use black smiley faces to blot out facial features.

Does that mean it bruised you, or that you were happy with it's low recoil? Guess it could be read either way.

I meant that the recoil is smooth due to the weight of the gun. I liked it.

So what is going on with the face editing?

The said friend is in the Marines and I respect his privacy. Nothing personal. I added the black smiley because I have a sense of humor.

Today I picked up my WASR-2 bought from Aim Surplus. I was pleased that the wood stock, although of soft wood, was not at all ugly. And the trigger was very good for a military rifle. The charging handle stuck through the shipping box and was quite beat up but apparently not bent. Aim needs to wrap the handle or otherwise improve packing. I was surprised that one of the included mags (the other mag is black plastic) was steel and closely resembled standard AK-47 mags. But it is for the 5.45. I will shoot the rifle ASAP. I got one because I was very impressed with shooting one belonging to a friend.

UPDATE: I am starting to get a lot of stove pipes lately. Hopefully it just needs a good cleaning.

Congrats Drakejake, you will enjoy it.

HMH, I had to clean my WASR-10 a few times quite thoroughly after range trips because of all the cosmoline I missed during my initial cleanups. I always spray the bolt down with BreakFree and give it a quick scrub after every trip. I then spray the bore down with some BreakFree and run a Boresnake through twice.
