TORIES TO REVIEW GUN BAN May 13 2004

THE Tories want to ease the law banning handguns passed after the Dunblane massacre.

Conservative home affairs spokesman James Paice said the Tories wanted the law reviewed during a speech in the House of Commons yesterday.

But he denied there was any specific Tory plan to repeal the handgun ban, although the idea had not been ruled out.

He said: 'The Conservative Party are committed to carrying out a review of firearms with a view to consolidation and simplification rather than penalising the lawful sporting user.'

Paice said handgun use had doubled since Labour's 1997 ban.

The Tories are understood to want handguns to be legalised for use in shooting clubs.

Thomas Hamilton, who murdered 16 children and their teacher at Dunblane Primary school in 1994, was a member of a gun club. The four guns he used in the slaughter were legally held.

In March, the Daily Record first revealed the Tories wanted to alter the law after Homeland Security spokesman Patrick Mercer said it was 'nonsense'.

A Labour spokesman said: 'The Tories have no concerns for the feelings of the people of Scotland or the families of the victims of gun crime.'
