I was picking up my brass the other day and noticed that the guy's cases from the next lane had the primer torn or almost shredded by the striker. A couple of them actually seemed to have a hole in them since there was a bit of black smudge on them. Anybody ever seen this before. All my pistols are hammer fired and leave a dimple in the middle of the primer. This didn't look too good to me.

It's pretty common, but the pierced primers aren't.

Especially in the really short guns now available, the barrel starts unlocking before the firing pin can get out of the way.

It can also be a sign of a weak recoil or striker spring.

Well, I have seen pierced or "blanked" primers from hammer fired pistols, too.
I suspect it is due to faulty ammunition or an individual faulty gun, not the operating system.

Primer swipe is more prevalent in some guns, than others. It can usually be improved by changing recoil springs, or adjusting the loads. It's not that uncommon.

Pierced primers can also be a symptom of a long firing pin, or barrel lock time, but usually an overly long firing pin. Excess pressure can cause it, but there are normally other indications of over pressure present, too.

Hope this helps.

I'm pretty sure it was Winchester white box in 40S&W. It does seem to look like the barrel unlocked before the firing pin retracted. "Primer swipe", that is the term I was looking for, thanks. It was a black polymer pistol, I didn't see the brand so I won't start that war, ha,ha.
