TOW Bucks County Rifle Kit Update #18

First find something for the patch. Do you have large enough scraps of stock wood left over from earlier operations?
My inclination would be to cut a little deeper, below the level of the toe plate, bearing in mind the need to produce a clean flat face for a tidy glue line. I would also cut in towards the centre line so that some of the new wood will be under the brass. Maybe double the width required. I think I would try to slightly undercut the ends of the damaged section, using a very sharp blade so that the new piece would be dovetailed in (as seen from the side). The reason for doing so is simply that it would look like a better class of repair work. I doubt that invisible repair is an option here. When cured, re inlet, veeerry gently!
I might, when all else is finished and there will never be a need to remove the toe plate again, consider taking it out one last time and putting some epoxy on the edge behind the repair to give that short grained sliver of wood a little more support against knocks.

Bye now - just off to see if you said a bad word!
