Finally got some hard data today on the Trailboss and a 16" TC carbine with a 4x scope...

Chrony was a Beta Master.

First off, the stuff burns cleaner than any other powder I have seen, little or no flash, and very little report. Also the barrel NEVER got hot...this stuff burns very "cool".

Now...the brass was mixed...but it was either RP or WW so can't get too much deviation there. I also did not crimp the bullets, but as there was NO unburnt powder in any of the loads, I don't think that would be an issue. I shot three rounds with a CCI 200 primer and 3 with a WLRM. It was overcast with the temp at 80 degrees with a rather harsh wind blowing from left to right, about 15-20 mph (blew hell out of my 22 Hornet shooting)...but the groups were all at 50 yards. The CCI's gave the best overall performance. This powder obviously doesn't need the extra oompf of a mag primer...

400 gr. speer JFN and 13.0 gr trailboss
CCI-200
817, 810 and 809
WLRM
794, 803, and 792
approx 2.5" group

350 Hdy RN and 14.0 gr TB
CCI 200
942, 936 and 941
WLRM
928, 938 and 939
approx 3.5" group

325 gr FNGC from Beartooth bullets and 14.5 gr TB
CCI 200
1142, 1128 and 1107
WLRM
1119, 1125 and 1141
approx. 6" group...didn't understand this one...

300 gr. Sierra HP 16.0 gr TB
WLRM
1182, 1177 and 1171
approx 3" group

The groups were all shot seperately. There was very little deviation of group size within each bullet weight.

I am very happy with the overall performance vs charge weight. All of these loads left very little empty air between powder and bullet...and the 400 gr. loads were by far the least recoiling. Now...with this being a "cast bullet" powder, the 325's really suprised me. They are sized to 459 and have three lube bands...overall a nicely shaped bullet, for what thats worth. Perhaps the fact they were GC'd is a potential issue...but then explain the performance of the others?

I believe the best of the bunch that shows the most promise in my carbine would be the 350 RN Hornady's. I feel that 3" group can shrink a little...I think that with work, its downrange performance will be tops over the rest of the bullets.

My next project is to go after a few CB loads with my 30-30's (Savage 340 bolt and Win 94 20") and traillboss, as well as get close to a max load with those 45-70's....at least until my shoulder gives out. :D
