A couple of Sundays ago myself and another friend decided to go out and test fire a couple of guns I had repaired.
Well upon arriving at the range I noted a poorly dressed subject with a white bucket picking up the discarded range brass. I didn't notice any means of transportation in or around the range which is about 2 miles from the nearest paved road.
In approaching the male, he immediately asked me if I wanted to buy the brass he was picking up. I then asked him what he was doing here, and how he got out here. Before he had a chance to answer we saw about 4 adults, and 3 small children walking down the dirt trail from behind the main berm of the range. He then answered that he and some friends were camping out here. I asked where, and he indicated directly behind the range.
I informed him that quite a few people come out here and shoot, and that he would have been directly in line with the shooting. To which he acknowledged, and stated when people start shooting they move off to the side.
The children looked very dirty and unkempt, and were wearing "flip flaps" on their feet (broken glass laying all over the range). Really a sad state of affairs to say the least. The oldest looked to be about 5 years of age, there were 2 women that looked to be in about the same condition as the kids.
It was determined they had no means of transportation, and though they didn't admit it, they were obviously homeless. Needless to say we didn't engage in any shooting that morning, and instead called Metro to come out and investigate, the obvious; child endangerment.
I don't know why, but I felt a tremendous amount of guilt calling the police on those people, but hopefully the kids were properly taken care of.
