While I research this out myself, I want to post the question of transporting firearms from Utah, through Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and ultimately to Connecticut. My son is moving and I’m hauling most of his stuff for him. There are numerous publications concerning the gun laws of the states but many can change before the ink is dry. The firearms (except my carry gun) will be in a locked metal cabinet in a locked trailer pulled behind my vehicle. I don’t anticipate any problems but wonder if anyone has had a similar experience.

Legality becomes more of a grey area once you stop overnight, which I'm sure you'll be doing.

Several responses:

FOPA '86 offers you protection as long as you are transporting the guns in accordance with its requirements. Locked in the trailer, unloaded, will be fine. However, FOPA is only a defense which should prevent you from being convicted and going to jail. It is not a shield against being arrested and having property confiscated. In most states this is not an issue. Unfortunately, you are traveling through two very gun-unfriendly states where it COULD be. (NY and IL) As they say, "you may beat the rap, but you won't beat the ride."

That means you need to keep a low profile and minimize your time spent in those states. Fill up the tank, eat, and pee before you cross into those states, and drive within a few MPH of the speed limit while there. Drive straight through. Don't stop. That's your best bet.

Your carry gun is covered by the laws of whatever state you're in at the time. (Check here: www.handgunlaw.us) If you choose to carry it on your person and/or loaded, FOPA doesn't cover it so you must meet the requirements of that state's laws.
