In October to visit a old Vietnam Buddy. He lives outside of Fort Kent just across from the Canadian border.

I will be carrying my favorite duo, the Glock 36, 45 ACP and Glock 29, 10mm.

Traveling by car from Miami through GA SC NC VA MD DE NJ NY VT NH and ME.

I have made a similar trip before but not up to Maine . Ended in New Hampshire.

Need to go to New Jersey to visit a elderly sick cousin.

Any advice on gun suggestions will be most appreciated .

The NRA can probably give you up to date info about rules and regulations in each state. I've always heard NY and NJ can be very strict and unforgiving for anyone traveling through with a handgun.

If you're going through N.J. and stopping there to visit someone, then I would bring no guns at all on the trip. Not worth the possible consequences (at least for me) of a traffic stop.

The New England states from NY to the SE tip of Massachusetts are going to be your problem. A FL carry permit is not legal in those states. FOPA is not always going to protect you, even though it should as written. If you take the fast paths through those states, don't stay at any lodging overnight, and follow the protection act, you might avoid the bane of local law enforcement.

For NJ, if you have to stop, you could mail your firearms ahead of you to Maine from a common carrier hub.

Stoping in NJ is problematic. State and local LEO have an established track record of zealous and enthusiastic enforcement of state and local laws and the application of FOPA to a stop to visit family is questionable at best.

I asked a similar question in May. We drove from GA to Maine. New York state is a huge road block. It is impossible for a non-resident to possess a handgun there. Technically if you are only passing through and don't make any stops you can do it. But I decided it wasn't worth the risk. I left my guns at home.

Thank you for the many suggestions so far.

I am definitely traveling with my 2 guns. No way leaving them at .home. Through the hostile states of .MD NJ NY, my vehicle is retrofitted with a concealed compartment that even the CIA would find difficult to discover ,much less the NJ Higbway Patrol.

I'll be making a permanent move next spring in the opposite direction, and will have to pass through NY in the process (western part at least, thank goodness). They will all be stored action open, cable locked and in a secured lockbox, out of reach of any driver or passenger. We do not intend to stop in the state for any reason, not even fuel. This is a drive I've made many years over the decades, and want this one to go as smoothly as any.

Although the risk may be minimal you are traveling through some hostile states that will arrest you and bring felony charges. Only you can decide if that’s a chance you’re willing to take.

It seems the OP has made his decision.
