Traveling to Canada

Scottfrmga - I suggest you check the facts. What you've posted are the rules for shipping shotguns and rifles to oneself through the US Mail, which indeed is legal.

However, the rules for handguns are quite different. See below:

(B7) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?

A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

[18 U.S.C. 1715, 922(a)(3), 922(a)(5) and 922 (a)(2)(A)]

Note the bolded section. Handguns are not mailable, and must be sent by contract carrier (UPS, FED-EX, etc)

Your info was incorrect.

Here is a link to the Blaine Harbor, a stone's throw away from the border crossing. You may call them and see if they have any storage lockers for rent. I live only 20 minutes south of Blaine and have been to that harbor, but I don't recall if they have lockers or not. Another option is to try the Bellingham Marina Harbor. You should call Blaine PD though, they have likely had this question before and could point you in the right direction. Here is a link to Blaine PD, and one to the Port of Bellingham/Blaine Harbor if you have any luck finding a number for them.

I'll check on some rental lockers in Bellingham and let you know if I find any.

find a bus station with a locker. you also need a passport to go into Canada. if you are leo custom's might hold it for you. do not carry any type of defense with you when you go to Canada. you can carry that big can of bear spray but you cannot carry the small ones that are designed for people. Customs doesn't joke around. if they want to search, let them search. if you tell them NO you will be searched and then refused entry perminately. do not have extra ammo in the vehicle. if you have ammo and they find it, that means you have hidden the gun and they will search longer.

If you're a LEO the US Border Patrol office where you cross should have courtesy lock boxes that you can leave your gun and ammo in while your in Canada. I don't know if they extend this courtesy to licensed non-LEO's. You should call and check.

When I worked on the Mexican Border we did this for LEOs on official business or not officially for guys from the SO we knew. If you know somebody there you wouldn't be asking this question but don't expect a LE agency to become keeper of your gun while you're in Canada.

I don't know about the Border Patrol offices down south but here in Maine I've used the courtesy lock boxes at two different BP offices without any trouble. I just called ahead to be sure they had them available, the officers were very nice about it and very friendly.

Here's a few links that might interest you if your coming up to Canada. First is the RCMP's Firearms program site - lots of info there on what and how to do things: http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/cfp-pcaf/

Next is Canadian Gun Nutz (CGN), a forum for all things gun related in Canada. If your going to be in Canada for awhile you might want to sign up. Feel free to introduce yourself and ask any questions you may have. I'm sure you could find someone willing to take you out to their local range or gun show if you expressed an interest. I'm there under the same handle.

JohnL2 - as for Montreal I couldn't point you to any specific place to go but it's a beautiful and historic city and you should be able to find lots to entertain yourself with. Ask at CGN for ideas - lots of folks from there can point you in the right direction.

I just got back from a trip to Canada this weekend, funny thing happened to me when I got to the border coming back into the US the officer in the booth struck up a conversation with my daughter telling her his parent's thought he was a bad person for carrying a gun! I thought that was kind of a funny thing to say to my daughter who is only 10 years old. Reading earlier post do you think they have that iformation? I am a ccw permit holder in Michigan. I was thinking as i was reading was he trying to get my daughter to say my dad carries a gun. He did not ask if i had a firearm in the vehicle.
