Traveling with Shotgun through Chicago

I'm never traveled with a gun before and while I've got the information on checking my gun with the TSA at the airport I'm still a bit concerned about traveling both through Chicago and up to Wisconsin with no FOID as Arkansas doesn't require such identification. My more experienced buddies tell me I'm worried over nothing as long as I store it unloaded in a hard-sided, locked case at the airport but any confirmation that I'm worried about nothing from folks up in Illinois and Wisconsin would be greatly appreciated.

Stored as you describe you'll have no problems and will be legal in IL.
You don't need, and can't get, a FOID because you are not an IL resident.

I would also recommend that you check the guidelines published by your specific airline, as it is possible for them to differ from one another. Follow the guidelines, and you be fine. I have, however, heard of people printing out the specific TSA and airline rules, just to have them handy in the event of poorly trained or misinformed personnel.
