Tried out a silencer today

Went to the range today to test some more loads in my Savage Hog Hunter .308 (the good news is that the scope seems sorted out and all bullets I sent downrange are accounted for!). When I was about done another guy got there. I guess he saw my gun and became intrigued. He asked me about it, ask what length the barrel was, then asked if he could throw his silencer on it to test it on a rifle with a 20" barrel.

I think I'm sold, and once I graduate and can afford a $1200 silencer/tax stamp I'm gonna have to get one of these! He had some subsonic ammo and I swear, it kicked less than my .223 Savage and was only slightly louder than a suppressed Ruger 10/22 with supersonic ammo that I had the pleasure of shooting over Christmas.

I could definitely see myself hog hunting with a silenced .308 if I ever end up in Texas.

Kinda makes you wonder why silencers aren't required at public functions in this country (like in Europe) . The NFA near-ban on silencers is one of the more historically bone-headed firearm law decisions we've made in this nation. I mean, c'mon, it makes gunfire safer and guns harder to conceal--why not require these "firearm inhibitors"?

Abso-f'n-lutely. If you'll pardon my French. In Europe, one can barely own a gun, but suppressors are commonplace among those that do. Recoil IS usually reduced since the gasses are bled off at a much lower velocity. I've worked with a number of them and they are just wonderful. From .22LR to 9mm, to .22-250 they just make sense. You can't do a thing about the sonic 'crack', but still, reducing a '250 to little more than a rimfire signature is a good thing. I especially like the 'overbarrel' types that utilize a large chamber fitted over the barrel of a bolt action with minimal overall length extension. Would be great if we could ever get our idiots in government to realize the folly of requiring special licensing for such an obviously benign device.

I picked mine up in January, a .22 Guardian. I guess it's the tip of the iceberg as I now plan on picking up a few more. It's just so much more pleasant to shoot with so much less noise. Maybe a 223 next time.

If I had to guess, I would say the reason for silencers in the NFA was an anti-poaching law, not a an anti-violent crime law. There was a time when people taking game out of season and out of permitted hours of shooting was a much bigger problem than it is today. Still think it is stupid; I would own a fleet of them if they were legal in my state.

You can buy a kestrel for around 500-700 for .223 I've shot my buddy's and as far as I can tell from limited use they seem to be quality stuff. My dealer only stocks stuff that he himself would own and has a case full of them. My buddy and dealer are the same guy I've known him about 15 years

Suppressors are NFA the same reasons many states still outlaw switchblade and butterfly knives - because some idiot elected official a long time ago saw a mafia movie and a 1950's motorcycle gang movie double feature and went home shaking in his panties. Next day - scary devices used by criminals in dumb movies were made illegal!

NFA dealer friend of mine ahs a bunch. Most fun is a Isreali made Uzi. After factory supressed Ruger pistols.
AR 15s are not that quiet.

OP, you can find some good deals on suppressors if you look around, especially at smaller shops. I found a new Thompson Machine Poseidon for about $150 off, and recently a suppressor manufacturer went out of business and a dealer was wanting to get rid of his inventory, so I got about $350 off a .30 cal can. You've just gotta know what you're looking for and be ready to jump on a deal.

I recently acquired a Ruger Mark III 22/45 with threaded barrel, top and bottom rails. I've bought a Huntertown Guardian 22 for the .22. Am having the barrel threaded on a 10/22 that I've owned for some time now. I only paid $200 for the Guardian 22 suppressor.

I have a Lonewolf threaded barrel on backorder for my G17. Will acquire a Huntertown Guardian 9, which will work not only with the G17, but also with the ruger pistol, rifle, and the my new .300 Blackout AR. Guardian 9 is only $325.

if if you're on a budget, the Yankee Hill 308 suppressors can be had for $500-600 pre-hysteria. they sound pretty good, but are heavy as bricks. still, for the price, a great value.

that said, zak's thunderbeast suppressors aren't that expensive either. i am about to buy my 3rd one.
