I was watching a popular TV show tonight, one not known for its safe or realistic gun handling practices, but did come away with one thing. As the main characters were being hunted by the bad guys, one overzealous protagonist was the only armed good guy. As they were racing through the woods they thought they were alone in, this character lets off a round at the first thing that is dashing towards them.
Their first mistake was not being aware of their environment. In the rush to "get away" environmental awareness was lost entirely.
The second mistake was not knowing the target. The character simply let of a round at what they only knew was not a member of the fleeing party.
As things turned out, the target was another one of the "good guys" out searching for a missing member of the team. This team member lost their life as a result of the others ignoring the rules.
While this may not be a real life example, it did make me stop and think. Always keep your awareness, and always know your target. It seems that it is so prevalent to hear that every second counts in an encounter, but the end result counts even more. So follow the rules (all of them), stay safe, and stay alive.
