Ive got a Kokura arsenal type 99 rifle. The marking on the left of the SN says its a series 23. The receiver has a date under the wood line of 1942. Its been stripped of the accessories, aircraft sights, cleaning rod, monopod and dust cover. It has a chrome bore. Anyone have a better clue about these rifles? Does this sound right? SN is 4408X

You may have already seen this, but the following link has some good info:

This site also has some good pics of "representative" rifles from each series of Arisaka.

From what you describe, you have a basic Series 23 Arisaka Type 99. Bear in mind that, as the war progressed, some arsenals left off features that had been used in earlier series. For that reason, aircraft sight wings or monopods may have never been a part of your rifle, even though it appears it was made for them. Of course, these items could also have been stripped from the rifle by a soldier to lighten his load, as was often done with the dust covers. I'm no expert on when certain features were dropped by the arsenals, so I'm not sure if these items were just never put onto your rifle, or if they were removed at some later time. Either way, you've got a nice piece of history. I hope it's in good shape. Does it still have its mum?

Pick up some Hornady 7.7 Jap ammo and have fun. It's expensive to shoot, but they're great rifles. I have a Series 21 Kokura. It's scary accurate.
