Police asked if they want guns on patrol
Feb 23 2003

Thousands of front line police officers have been surveyed on whether they want to carry guns.

The Police Federation has asked more than 6,500 members on whether officers should be routinely armed, Police Review magazine revealed.

Results of the first national survey in seven years to address the issue are due to be published next month.

"I expect it will be a useful guide when we re-examine our policy," said Federation chairwoman Jan Berry.

"There are enormous implications in such change.

"Just think about the logistics in respect of training, equipment and ... the huge increase in responsibility for all officers. We need to think about the whole issue very carefully."

But police organisation Protect the Protectors said a survey of just 6,500 officers was insufficient.

Last month, relatives of police officers killed in the line of duty backed the group's call for all 127,000 officers in England and Wales to be balloted.

"This is such an important issue we should be asking every serving police officer," said director Pc Norman Brennan.

Last month Home Office crime figures showed gun crime rocketed by 35% in 2002 to nearly 10,000 offences - the fourth consecutive annual rise.

It also showed criminals were using handguns in 46% more offences.

That's a stinkin' lie. How can that be? Privately owned handguns are banned in the UK.

I guess the crims must get those guns from Virginia or Florida...

Haven't seen any posts by agricola for a while. Maybe this will tease him out from under the bed.... :D

Not being an expert on euro police practice, do police in other members of the EU routinely carry weapons? I've read where the EU has come across with a rather heavy hand on mundane things like playground equipment...and I'm wondering if EU compliance on law enforcement issues, is playing a role here?

Whether they take a sample ballot, or poll the entire force, I can't imagine the bobbies "not" wanting to pack. If this gets voted down, I'll be very puzzled.

I'd bet that they are too civilized to sink to the level of their customers and would much prefer a whistle and a shout of "STOP Police".

After reading all the UK news lately, the anti-gun laws passed, etc., I'm about convinced that the English have all descended from the H. Chamberlain "Peace in our time" lineage as opposed to the W. Churchill (half American) "We will fight in the streets" school of thought.

Criminals... they used to send them to the Colonies, doncha know? And here we are today. Don't know WHAT happened in Australia.

Adios

I can't imagine any Police Officer in any country willingly placing himself (or her self) in harms way unarmed considering the total disregard for law and order by a heavily armed criminal element.

It shocks me to read that the crime rate is up by such a large percentage. That must mean that crimes of violence are also up, therefore I can only assume that crimes using weapons (Dare I say GUNS) are also up? That just cannot be, not in Gun free England. I for one am totally shocked>

I doubt they will get a yes vote. They didn't last time. There would be a number of officers who would refuse to carry at all on the grounds that "I didn't join the police service to kill people" and others would be deemed pyschologically unsuitable. All these people would have to be made redundant and paid off.
Judging from the poor hit-to-shots-fired ratio from to the existing supposedly trained officers the prospect of handing guns to a bunch of people who have no knowledge or wish to have them is not appealing.

Since certain British government authorities are quoted (not in this article) as saying that the gun ban "gets the guns off the streets," I don't understand why the police need to be armed.

Norwegian police officers have traditionally been opposed to the idea of arming themselves, and I don't see a change in the immediate future. A "British" rise in crime levels may cause a change, though.

There are several differences between Norway and Britain:
* Norwegian officers are routinely unarmed, all of them, the Brits have "specially trained" officers who are routinely armed. Even Norwegian "SWAT" officers are unarmed on patrol duty, they only bring guns when they expect to need them.
* All Norwegian officers are trained (apparantly very well trained by international standards) and know how to use guns if/when they have to arm themselves, not just "special" units.
* And the difference you guys will find most amusing: Britain has "no guns". Norway is one of the three countries in the world with the highest number of gun owners per capita, the other two countries being the US and Finland, not necessarily in that order.

When I say that our police patrol unarmed, I mean unarmed, that includes nightsticks, gas and other "arms". It is not unheard of for unarmed police officers to disarm armed criminals. But looking back at the quote above, they do not "place themselves in harms way" by knowingly getting into an armed confrontation without arming themselves.

That's a truth in need of certain modifications, is it not, my friend? I have heard complaints of lack of training both from police officers themselves and the nervous shooters who sometimes have to practice beside them at the range.
