Ultrasonic Cleaning Of Brass

Why bother? You've already got the solution to the problem...your tumbler. And it sounds like it works OK. Ultrasonic cleaners are best suited for things like jewelry. Regarding Harbor Freight, caveat emptor.
Was hoping it would eliminate the cleaning of the primer pockets. I reload a lot of berdan primed Swiss brass and it is a royal pain to clean out the primer pockets with a dental pick. I found that a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water with a drop or two of dishwashing liquid will clean out the primer pockets but I'm a little concerned about what effect the vinegar will have on the brass. As for now I've given up on it and went back to the tumbler. Thanks for all the suggestions.

tried out the Oster massage thing . just because I have one and never use. wanted something that i could vibrate a few loaded bullets to get xlox off the cases after i finish loading. Tried out my 5 gal. rolling tumbler . but cases seem to get dings bouncing around.

1 part Simple Green, 3 parts Hot Water

I use my US cleaner for 5.7x28 brass to preserve the lacquer coating. 1 part Simple Green, 3 parts hot water gets the brass very clean but not shiny. IMHO a tumbler does a MUCH better job on MUCH larger batches.

Hornady has a new US machine coming soon. From what I've been shown, it gets everything clean. They have their own solution. Checkout their website.

tried mixing in corn cob kitty litter for higher polish. Seem to dilute my walnut hull and take longer for marginal benifit . Trashed the kitty liter, and will replace the walnut hull and corn cob mix i have left.

That is what I use. I go with about a 50:50 ratio and add a half cap full of Nu-Finish to every load. I put a few pieces of used dryer sheet cut into ~ 1" x 2" squares too.

Tried the $79.99 2.5 liter ultrasonic cleaner from Harbor Freight.

With a single transducer, the ultrasonic cleaning power was limited to the middle of the tank. Doing the "aluminimum foil" test showed that the cleaning action was limited to about the middle 3" diameter of the tank - no perceptable effect beyond that.

It went back.

Looking at alternatives, but they seem to run at least $300 - $350. On the plus side, they have multiple transducers and are large enough to take most handguns.

parker51,

I have been trying to get Berdan primers for 2 years, where are you getting them? They seem to be made of unobtanium.

Thanks in advance,

I read the article at 6mmBR and got an ultrasonic and the stuff to go with it.
It works... but is not worth the effort.

I am not sorry I bough it, because it cleans the Copper solvent out of bronze bore brushes.

I am now using a Thumber Tumbler and stainless steel media to get my brass clean.

My ultrasonic doohiuckie from Harbor Freight does a good job of case cleaning, using water and Simple Green mixed 10:1, but it does a terrible job at case polishing. That's OK, because dumping the cleaned cases into a tumbler for an hour makes 'em all shiny and using the ultrasonic doohickie first keeps my tumbling media from getting all goobered up and dusty.

One note on any ultrasonic cleaning solution - let it run for several minutes before adding the parts to be cleaned. This allows dissolved gasses (air) to dissipate from the solution and is necessary to get full cleaning effect.
