Un Regestered Ammunition???

I saw in national news a story of a man arrested in D.C. There was some kind of holiday road checkpoint and D.C. Metro found a few loose shotgun shells in his car. No gun, no open container, no priors, no warrents. e.t.c.... They charged him with possession of un-registered ammunition. Can somebody please tell me what is un-registered ammunition?

It hasn't passed into law yet, but they are working on it.

The really sad part is that the whole thing is driven by a couple schmucks that made the technology, couldn't find a company to adopt it - so they bought a lobbyist and are now pushing for it to become law in DC. If they get it passed, they'll have a monopoly on the technology and be rich instantly. This has nothing to do with gun control, just greed.

In an area that totally banned handgun possession, why are you surprised that ammo had to be registered?

Apparently according to the DC metropolitan police site you cannot have ammo in your possession that does not fit a gun registered to you. He was from Delaware so no weapon in DC registered to him but he had ammunition. Essentially he had ammunition for a gun not registered to him in DC. It is pretty ludicrous for a place that gets so much revenue from tourism. God forbid you be driving through and get stopped at a "checkpoint". Oh wait thats what happened to him? Wouldn't this be covered under FOPA??

WASHINGTON - Authorities near the White House arrested a man after he drove up to a security checkpoint in his car and drew the attention of wary police dogs, police said.

The car approached a checkpoint at an intersection near Lafayette Park, just north of the White House, soon after 6 p.m. Wednesday, and police dogs grew suspicious of the car, according to police accounts. Several fire trucks, police cars and other emergency vehicles reported to the area after the driver was taken into custody.

The driver was questioned before being arrested for possession of unregistered ammunition (shotgun shells) and having an unregistered vehicle, said Ed Donovan, a spokesman for the Secret Service. The car was found to be safe about two hours later, he said
Donovan identified the man as Andrew Martin, 20. Martin was from Delaware, Donovan said, though the agency spokesman did not know what city.

Wow, that's nuts. Did the dog (bomb-sniffing dog, I assume?) smell the gunpowder in the shotgun shells? I have a small bag (the kind you'd carry on an airplane, carry on luggage type thing) that's had once-fired empty brass sitting in it for years. A bomb-sniffing dog would probably smell that. (note to self, don't go to DC or try to fly with that bag!)

Don't they usually just give a ticket for expired license plates? I am not clear what they meant by "unregistered vehicle". Was it not registered and had no plates or was it not registered in DC and had expired Delaware tags?

And how does a dog "grow suspicious"? Did they whisper to their handlers that something didn't seem right? Usually a dog Alerts or Points to indicate a positive indication for drugs or explosives. It sounds like the HANDLERS needed to make up an excuse for searching the car and invented suspicious dogs.

But no doubt they ripped up the dash cut up the tires and destroyed the upholstery just to be on the safe side.

The Uniformed Division of the Secret Service (UDSS) has responsibility for the protection of the White House, Vice President's residence, U.S. Treasury (Departmental Offices), and foreign diplomatic missions. This responsibility allows them to establish checkpoints and erect physical barriers in/around these locations, and they do exactly that. They used to maintain a relatively small perimeter around the White House itself (the wall around the yard, essentially), but after several attacks during the Clinton administration they closed off Pennsylvania Avenue and established a larger perimeter that included Lafayette Park.

Lafayette Park is the small strip of grass directly across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House, on the north side of Penn Ave. between the Treasury Annex and the Blair House complex. The north/south 16th Street ends at Lafayette Park just north of the White House (hence the White House address of 1600 Pennsylvanie Avenue) and does not resume on the south side of the White House.

It is not uncommon for the UDSS to detain folk, and for the Metro Po-Leece to be the ones actually doing the arresting.
