Hello all. New to the board and need some opinions. I will be purchasing my first handgun in the coming weeks and have narrowed my search to three...H&K USP Compact, Sig P229R and S&W M&P all in either 9mm or .40 S&W. Just curious if anyone has one of these guns or has had some firing time with them. Thanks in advance for any help.

You've listed all good choices.

I've got a Sig 226 (9mm) that is the longer version of the 229. I love it. More accurate than me.

1ST OFF, welcome to THR! :D
2ndly, how much handgun experience do you have? Those are all nice choices & great guns but for a novice, I normally recommend a 22lr wheelgun but if you have experience w/ handguns and you have a good basic grasp of trigger control and sight alignment, it would come down to budget. Me, I have a thing for HK & recommend them highly to anyone ready to listen ;)

yes welcome to THR, great choices for a first handgun, yes please tell us your experience level that will help us out a little bit. personally i am a dao kinda guy so i would go with the m&p, unless of course the usp that you are refering to is in the lem configuration, especially with little experience the fcat that there are no safety/ decoking levers, two different trigger pulls and such will make thinngs easier. all that can be a bit over whelming for some, but this is assuming that you have little experience.

also get what fits you best, if possible rent the models that you like and shoot em. see which one you like the best, shoot the best with and the one that you feel best with and that will be the ticket.

I appreciate everyones input. After spending 12 years in the Marine Corps I did spend alot of time firing a few different weapon systems but I also did have alot of time behind the the Beretta 92 which is our stock handgun. It had pretty good accuracy but boy was it heavy! Not much other than that though. Thanks again guys.

I don't care for the .40 at all, but I really dislilke the USP Compact in .40. The M&P is quite a bit more accurate for me. Draw your own conclusions.

I can speak for the Sig P229R

...

Got to tell ya, the P229R Carry 9mm, with, or without, CT laser grips is one SWEET Gun.

Easy to breakdown to inspect, clean and reassemble.

Sig Night sights are great, glow for hours.. 5hrs and going strong in the pure dark.. this I can attest too.

Shoots most accurate, and the recoil, is really not an issue, just so little to speak of..

And, the 2-stage decocker (only) is both soft, and quiet, when used, along with NOT having to sacrifice a/your proper 2-handed grip to use it. A Big PLUS.. IMO.

Otherwise, my P229R has a home for life, without doubt..

The three pistols you cite are all very good ones.

I would fondle each of those and decide which one fits you the best. If there is a range that you can rent and shoot each one at, I would do that too--before you buy.

I personally prefer the 40 over the 9mm for a PD cartridge, but I certainly dont feel unarmed when I carry a 9mm, provided it is loaded with proper ammo.

I have both the H&K USPc and the S&W M&P in 9mm.
I am more accurate with the M&P
Both break down easily for cleaning
H&K is more concealable
I have over 1700 rounds through each:
H&K - 1 feed failure
M&P - 1 feed failure, 1 stove pipe

H&K has more history
S&W has better customer service IF the M&P has issues (a big IF in my mind)
Rent to find out.
