Unloaded transport,into OHIO and back

How do i legally transport an unloaded weapon into Ohio,when visiting relatives?I have a lockable compartment on my MC,is it ok to carry the magazine in there? and the weapon in a pocket?
I can't find a suitable answer,even on Packing.org.

You're on the right track.

Keeping them seperate is required. Personally, to avoid any overzealous attention should you be pulled pver, I'd reverse what you planned. I'd put the pistol in the compartment and the mag on you. Ohio law says the action must be open if the firearm type allows it to remain open. Best idea (if you've got two compartments) is to have them seperate and neither one on your person. Whatever the case, they must be seperated. Back in my younger days I had a cop go all fruity on me because I had a few loaded mags. If you can swing it, carry the gun, empty magazine and ammo all seperated. Kinda hard on a scoot.

I guess this all depends on whether or not you are licensed to carry. If not, as 1911 pointed out, even though I have a CCW permit, I transport my firearms (especially long arms) unloaded and trigger locked in the cargo compartment of my SUV. Keys to the locks in my glove box. All ammo is trasported in an ammo can in the rear passenger area. Personally, I want to be sure that I don't piss off the cop that may stop me. The more of us firearm owners that have the opportunity to display transport safety to our officers of the law, the better. They deserve our cooperation and respect. Just my humble opinion/advice.

I live in PA,and have a CC permit,i usually ride the bike to visit as its cheaper on gas.I would like to find the legal way to do this. The peaceable journey law stated on Packing.org very vague.

I would keep the weapon and ammo out of the pocket. That's asking for trouble.

I think carrying the weapon in a case (locked is probably better) would be best. The definition of "loaded" might be the part in question. I would empty mags and keep ammo and weapon apart.

This is the "how-to" part. It's probably worth your time to read the whole thing, it's not that long.

(C) No person shall knowingly transport or have a firearm in a motor vehicle, unless it is unloaded, and is carried in one of the following ways:

(1) In a closed package, box, or case;

(2) In a compartment which that can be reached only by leaving the vehicle;

(3) In plain sight and secured in a rack or holder made for the purpose;

(4) In plain sight with the action open or the weapon stripped, or, if the firearm is of a type on which the action will not stay open or which cannot easily be stripped, in plain sight.

Short answer, Ohio does not recognize your PA permit, so store the weapon as mentioned above, and make sure the ammo is in the trunk or a separate compartment from the gun, and don't have loaded mags...that can be construed as a loaded weapon even if not in the gun, and you don't want to be another test case.
